hi ya,

As a result of a harsh winter outside and a lack of care on my part, I have now got very badly pitted stanchions. Luckily the main area fo travel seems largely unaffected, but there is damage.

I was wondering what I can do (apart from buy new stanchions) to try and recude the damage. Perhaps a coat of clear lacquer over the affected area? Replating the chrome, if that's possible?

Any help greatly appreciated!

Stinkwheel's bodge using araldite works quite well (do a search for it) though if it is really bad yes you can get the stanchions rechromed, just a case of finding somewhere in your area to sort it out. As for protecting them, keep them clean and polished, gaiters help as well by keeping all the shit off them.

I'd wait until they start leaking oil and then get them rechromed.

The chromers advertise in mechanics and probably the classic mags and MCN. They grind off the old stuff and apply a much thicker layer of good quality chrome.

End result is that it lasts longer ans takes more abuse before rust can poke through.
