the tread on the 'ace is ALMOST level with the wear indicators.. I've ordered some new tyres, which should be here today or tomorrow..

I'm going to Wales NEXT weekend (not this weekend) on the bike, with about 30 others for some biking fun.. Since I'll be doing about 600 miles easily over the weekend, including there and back, I'm wondering if I should get them replaced now, and use the ride there to try and scrub them in, or use what's left of the Sportecs and risk coming home on slicks...

I can't really go out for a ride between now and then, as I'm on call till Wednesday, so need to be by a phone 27/7 and no more than 45 mins from the office.

Get them fitted if your doing 600 miles. A new tire will generally settle in after 100 miles which still leaves you with 500 miles. It is not worth risking bald tires in the rain. This can also scare you as it will always be in the back of your mind and therefor won't lean as much probably.

I'd agree with that. Especially if you're riding with others, if it rains you'll be at a big disadvantage.

After a winter hammering my BT014 has worn to the wear indicators on the centre strip, about 50-75mm width. Im replacing it this weekend when the new one turns up but is it technically illegal or does the 75% rule not cover this?

Definately get them replaced if they are already touching the wear indicators. If it rains and you are on the knackered tyres you are greatly increasing the risk of throwing your bike up the road and try explaining that to the insurance assessor. And remember that there is always the possibility of getting caught by the old bill with them like that, especially with a large group of bikes, on a weekend thrashing around in Wales.

Replace them because on most tyres the wear indicators mean you have about 1.5mm left and the legal limit is 1mm. Once up to the wear indicators the tyres will wear alot quicker. Best use the trip to scrub them in as that is usualy about 100 dry miles.
