It's in quite a sorry state.

www.gaz-racing.co.uk/bike/TZR/

I'm going to have to completely strip it, and start from scratch, clean everything, oil everything.

My main concern, is the large nut at the top of each fork leg, has been graunched and rounded. Do I need to get these off? If I have to force them off, is it going to be new fork time?

The bike hasn't been looked after very well, I just need to get it running. It may well become my race bike, so doens't need to pass MOTs etc.

You're going to need to change the fork oil so they'll have to come off. Can't see from the picture how bad they are. Can you re-file the flats so you can get a good fit with a spanner?

Just crack them loose while the forks are still in the bike, it makes a good vice. Then you can strip them on the bench.

Confused

Not sure what to do.

I agree they'll have to come off, the fork seals need to be changed too. New forks aren't too expensive, so I don't mind too much if I have to wreck the forks.

Have a word with a couple of breakers and find out how much new fork tops are going to be before you smash them to bits.I dare say as they are quite old bikes they could be cheap. As for getting them out,can you file off all the burred bits to get a ring spanner on them? If you're able to get replacement tops you might be able to get them out with a pipe wrench.

Like the previous owner tried by the looks of it Shocked

Try loosening off the clip-on pinch bolts, they may be squeezing the top of the leg just enough to make a difference.

I've now filed the flats, and it resembles a nut again.

I think I'll await my dad's judgement before I do anymore. The joys of a project bike, all the fecking nuts are seized. I had to drill out one of the ones holding the exhaust on just below the pillion pegs. That took almost an hour.

I was semi thinking this could become my race bike, but I think I'm just going to get it running and road worthy and make the MZ my race bike.

EDIT: Also, anyone know where I can get a single seat conversion? or which bikes are likely to be able to bodge onto? There's a couple from RGV250s on ebay. Guess they might be close...

Nice to see somebody else is interested in doing a project. Also picked a good bike to work on. Hope it all goes well, and keep us updated, would be interested on seeing how things are coming along.

I think it'll run without too much work.

The forks are a sorry state though. I want to clean everything up, so drop the engine out, paint it all up, clean the carbs, oil everything. new footpeg, single seat conversion, fit indicators and mirrors on the front, new paintjob and it'll be a gorgeous road bike.
