Great handling 250 2 stroke but getting on a bit now,i had one and thought it was great except for the rebuild costs. They had a reputation for putting powervalves into pistons, not good and expensive to fix.The latter models had some kind of mod i believe which fixed this. A good one is worth having but if you find a dog steer well clear it could turn into a money pit Thumbs Down

ah okay, im looking for something quite cheap as i have my A2 lessons and test booked for next month, I can't afford much at the moment (in terms of insurance, can spend about 1200ish on a bike when i sell the cg) but really need a bit more power than a cg125, was thinking a 4 stroke 250cc, that wont be too hard on insurance but will handle longer distances and not struggle with 65mph...

Don't forget, if you want to be legal you will have to buy a restrictor kit for most 250 Sports bikes.
Also for £1200 you could get a 400 or a a mid 90's 500. Smile.

Those rgv250 look really nice. Small bike. Must really handle!

But you may as well get a 400 4 stroke, it is probably cheaper on insurance, and more reliable.

Same power, yeah heavier, but more useable for everyday.

How old are you? If you can get insured on an RGV you can get insured on an sports 400 4T.

Bear in mind those trusty 500s. Smile

If money's tight it'd probably be best to avoid an RGV in case it needs any engine work as it can get expensive.
When i fixed mine each part of the powervalve cost £60,each valve had 2 parts and each barrel had 2 valves, add the cost of piston, rings and replating Shocked

Id rarther take my chances on an old tatty KR1S than an RGV250, and thats really saying something! Modern reliable 2strokes, and the name Suzuki just dont go together!
Out of all the 90's 2stroke 250's the most expensive and probably the slowest when restricted, 250's were the Honda MC21/28, and the TZR250R, but they in my mind are the best 2 looking 250cc bikes ever made. The Yam is gorgeous, and the Honda is not far behind!

Well, ive just been thrashing around on one all day, so wudda ya wanna know? Razz

Bike was cheap to buy, Ultra cheap to insure (£215.55 TPFT 0NCB 0Years 20 years old, A2 liecence), no cirtificate of restriction was asked for, it goes like shit off a stick, will go round corners like nothing on earth, being a V win the power down low is also good. Bad stuff is though:

20mpg
Expensive oil please
rebuild me every 3000miles thanks.

I would seriously NOT recommend one as you main form of transport or for commuting. But i have a car for that and need something to get me out of the house and blow the cobwebs away on a sunny day Very Happy

Thats a top end rebuild every 3000, dont know about bottom end, i would just check it over then you do the top end and rebuild if neccicary.

Tank capacity is about 16-17litres with 3-4litre reserve. When ridden sensibly you can get about 70 miles before you hit reserve, when thrashed like a nutta its a fair bit less Razz

Is a fairly old pic of mine (taken by mike). Since then its had a few bits and bobs done to it to just generally tidy it up. Some of the bodywork isnt the best so i shall fill in the holes, sand it down, prime, spray, decal, lacker as soo as i have the spare cash to buy the stuff with.

https://www.rgv250.co.uk/rgvlr.jpg

Thats the original colour scheme i shall return it to. Id otn think its the nicest of colour schemes (black and chrome is better) But at least it will look tidy for when i come to sell it some day.

Yes they are expensive and impractical, but thats why you buy a car Wink he reason most own them is just for the grin factor of being able to knee down any corner, and hit the powerband and be gone Very Happy Very Happy Laughing

Think the 250 is closer to a top end rebuild every 10000 miles.

All the best

At the time my RGV was a fair bit cheaper to insure than a 400. I paid £500 tpft for the RGV, the same company wanted £750 for a sports 400.

They don't need rebuilding every 3000 miles, mine did at least 10,000 miles just in my hands before one of the pistons decided it had enough.

I can't remember ever having much more than 70 miles to the tank, or much less either Laughing This was on the 89-91 vj21 model though, the later models were slightly more fuel efficient, 10kg's heavier and 5bhp more powerful.

Fuel tank new holds 17 litres, though by now if it's anything like an average RGV the tank capacity will have been reduced by some dents/filler by now Smile Mine always did 25mpg however I rode it, which can be expensive Neutral Add to that the oil consumption, if ridden hard 1 litre of fully synth (around £10) every 200 miles and it starts getting very expensive. When you're spending that much on fuel, it makes sense to buy the stickiest tyres available, spending say £160 to last you 2000-2500 miles.

They are very fun bikes to ride but total money pits if you ride anything more than a couple thousand miles a year, which is why I changed to a VFR400.

RGV 250's are unbelievably quick, 130mph, quarter mile 12 second bracket, and when they are right there is very little that will trouble you on any winding back road including R1's etc. Trouble is by pure virtue of them being what they are ultra high performance two stroke twins they get absolutely thrashed which is what they where built for, so they wear out fairly quick and they also get crashed alot. When it comes to top end refurbs its not just a case of barrels of and re-bore, nope they have to be replated, and complete rebuilds are very expensive, but the most fun bit is topping up your two stroke oil and spilling it all over your back tyre because somebody at Suzuki in their infinate wisdom decided to put the oil tank in the tail peice right over the back wheel...not that I am trying to put you of or anything, just saying be careful what you buy, very careful...cheers Davy.
