A friend of my girlfriends family is selling their 2001 SV650S. I had a look today, and I must say it looked more like a 2003 bike with the condition it was in. 3200 miles, FSH £2750. I can tell this bike has been well looked after, female owner. As the title says...

Aye, I've not seen one as much as that before.

If I were you, I'd get one off ebay or a different one off biketrader. Cheaper by the dozen.

I was planning on buying from a dealer, but as I kinda know these people I'm quite happy to buy from them. They are selling at £2950 to anyone else.

I'd rather not buy private just yet until I'm really clued up on what to look out for. There's no-one to go with me either.

Those cheaper ones on AutoTrader are too far away from me. The one in the pic is 130 miles away.

We don't mean buy that one on Autotrader, its just to show you that the one that you've been offered is overpriced.

Your still buying private !
Just because you "kinda know them" doesn't mean that everything will be rosey. Do your homework and don't jump in.

Yes I know, but I'd rather not buy private, and all the trade prices are at the £3000 mark. These people I can trust, and therefore I'm not so worried about it being a private sale.

I know it sounds like I have my heart set on it (and it's true) and I do appreciate the advice (which is why I asked), but I have to make the decision soon (so I'm being objective).

Still, I might not pass my test on Tuesday, in which case it doesn't really matter Laughing

dont be afraid of buying private, there no real faults with sv650 since the engine is a monster{1} that will do well over a 100,000 miles and i can only think of 2 issues you will encounter.

1st issue is about 10-12 thousand miles the cam chains tend to start to rattle, its no problem and just a slight design flaw with the cam chain runners sticking, you can get it fixed for £70 or just ignore it and it may sort itself

second is the poor finish on the fork legs which will tarnish if you dont look after them, you can either ignore it, polish it out or get carbon fiber sheets to wrap around them to protect them.

the price seems a bit steep but since you know them i guess you can trust the milage and servicing has been done, if you really want it offer £2500 and see what they say.

oh and get an aftermarket endcan you would not belive the difference in sound and weight.

{1} well its not an animal like its tl1000 big brother but it is very well designed
