My mate has just bought himself a brand new "Hongdou CG125", hes asked me to go roung and assemble it for him, as it comes in a crate. Basically i was just wondering how long he will need to run the engine in for, and how to run it in properly... Cheers Thumbs Up Ive never had to run in an engine myself so im a bit lost Embarassed Cheers.

500 - 1000 miles is around about average.

When running it in, let it rev freely, and just take it easy.

Don't thrash it everywhere, and similarly, don't let it labour in a high gear, for example when going up hill.

Just cruise, take it easy. I'd recommend a service after it has been run in.

Did it not come with a manual detailing the running in procedure?

Thumbs Up

Being a Chinese made bike expect their tyres to wear out very quickly indeed because they are not as wear resistent as like Continental, Bridgestone, etc, as I know this from experience when I rode my old 125cc

So after your break-in period you will no doubt need to buy new tyres because the original ones will be bold by now so get a set of Continental's Conti tyres because they are extremely good for those bikes. Why? the Conti give better road grip for cornering and so in turn it gives you a secure feeling when doing so at turning or at speeds along the straight and especially in the wet!

The manual will be useless for the most part, written in poor English and sometimes is just wrong. It will not mention a thing about running in. I built up the revs and gears on mine over about 500 miles. Mind you, because they're so underpowered, it's difficult to not thrash it a bit earlier because it does get extremely frustrating doing middling rpm in 3rd and 4th - 35mph if you're lucky. The tyres are still fine, plenty of tread left on them more than 2000 miles later. Having said that, it's not the CG replica but the CM replica, and the tyres aren't the same.

500 miles is all it needs. But keep the revs low for the first 200, below half redline. Change the oil after this, stick to mineral 10W40 bike oil.

Modern engines can be let to rev freely without being thrashed whilst running in, but this is not a modern engine. This is a cheap Chinese copy of a 30 year old engine.

So. I'd do 250 miles below half redline, then the next 250 revving a little higher. Warm it up before riding for the first 100 or so, after that you can let it warm up whilst riding as you would normally ride.

The tyres may wear out quickly, or they may last forever. I know some of the old cheap eastern european stuff had tyres that never wore out (or gripped). Its only a CG, so just replace them with something cheap once they're knackered.
