Just a question that popped into my head at 20 to 1 in the morning....

I've seen a few sites that say you can't wheelie or countersteer a shaft drive bike?

Is this bullshit?

Countersteering has nothing to do with the drive mechanism of the bike.

Okay.

And I just remembered Charlie Boorman doing several wheelies on the 1150GS Adventure in Long Way Round.

I'll stop asking stupid questions and goto bed now!

I've seen a Mr Martin 'Wild' Child wheelie a 1200GS on a DVD that I have.

The axial rotation of the boxer engine means that you have to wheelie it at an odd angle because of the tourque steer, but this is nothing to do with the fact that it is shaft drive.

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

I recently wheelied a new gs 1200 quite easily. So I suppose it doesn't make a difference if it is shaft driven.

I have a shaft drive BMW R1100S and while I'm no wheelie god, I can report that the only time I notice the torque reaction from the shaft is when blipping the throttle at lights. Makes no difference to counter steering / cornering. In fact its the best handling bike I've ever had.

Ditto above apart from I have 1150gs. The new BM Shafties don't suffer from Torque reaction thanks to the Paralever setup.
Not sure about any other makes though, I do know it was realy bad on a old Honda Maggot (CX500) a freind let me have a go on years ago, if you rolled off or on the power going round a corner it tried to throw you off. He said you got used to it .....Er yea alright. Rolling Eyes

Torque reaction will do that as it'll try and make the bike go vertical. Sounds like a good way to learn how to ride and corner really smoothly Thumbs Up The reaction has nothing to do with counterstearing, you'll have to do that anyway in order to get the bike round the corner.
