I think its time for me to get a colour screen...
Theres two ways i can go about it and i'm not sure what to do...
1. Spend £400 on a new one with colour screen and all the wonders within, +sell mine for quite a bit less than i payed for it..
2. Use the spare pda i have laying about, get power and data cables to connect it to my gps i have now, have the old one mounted on the handle bars, keep the pda in the tankbag and hope that it will put up with the condensation e.t.c. Lots of hassle but will hopefull cost no more than £60 (if the tom tom software i have actually works)
£400 is a hell of allot of money to spend on a gadget but they really are great to have and hopefully it will hold its value pretty well if i need to flog it.And yeh maps are very nice but they aren't exactly as convinient and you have to know where you are in the first place!
What do you think? Should i go for it or is it a worse idea than wearing honey coated pants and launching yourself into a bee hive? ____________________ >RidingSkills<->Tech Tips<->MyBikes< |

ADAM, have you not rigged yours up to give it a constant supply from the battery?
I thought that was the whole idea? Or did you charge it up on the bike and just d/c it to see how long it would alst? |

Haven't bothered wiring it up to the bike. Not much point unless you fancy doing 12 hours in the saddle!
On low level light you can see everything clearly anyway (like on full power in a room basically) even in the rain! And I tested it before I went by charging it up and leaving it switched on on my desk and counted how many hours it would last for.
As long as it went over 5 hours I knew we'd be ok. Didn't switch it on at all on the way down through the UK, as I knew where I was going. Only turned it on when we rolled off the chunnel at Calais.
Took us seven hours to get there, including stops, and the battery level was still a quarter full.
Left it on through the UK too on the way back and it lasted about 10-11 hours. I wouldn't want to spend more time than that on the bike to be honest.
Just took charger with me and charged it up in the truck and hotel room while we were there. Job done. ____________________ Colin McRae MBE 1968 - 2007 RIP

Saw the garmin quest, i dont know it dosen't look like garmins usual "throw it at brick walls" build quality..
I'd allways havce mine wired up but allways have enough battery just in case as well.. i get allot of use out of mine, its cool to take out on rideouts or places i haven't been before so i can look on the map afterwards and work out where i have actually been
I'm thinking of geting a street pilot 3, probably second hand... how much was the quest? i know they are quite similar, the quest is probably more user friendly... ____________________ >RidingSkills<->Tech Tips<->MyBikes< |

Quest is waterproof and I've already dropped mine on the drive and it's still fine.
Bought mine for £350 on a Buy It Now listing on ebay.
Mount was about £30-40 on top of that, but it was a Ram one and is top banana. Garmin do one now that has the wiring built in too.
Great thing was that it comes with all of Europe as the base map, which means you can gets basic directions to anywhere using main roads etc. But you can upload the detailed bits for the route you're going, right down to street level. Giving you Fuel stations, hotels, places of interest etc. I got the car mount included in the box which has a speaker attached for voice commands for directions, as well as the mains charger, Europe mapping software and installation software for the unit to pc etc.
Best piece of kit I've bought since my bike. ____________________ Colin McRae MBE 1968 - 2007 RIP
