Just out of interest, do these digital SLR cameras need special types of lenses. My dad is into amatuer photography and was thinking of a digital SLR body to go with his large amount of lenses. Would they work, or would he need a new set?

Generally they use the standard lenses.

There are exceptions. The Canon digital cameras use the EF lenses, not the older manual focus FD lenses. Sigma lenses are common, but with occasional compatability issues (normally they can be upgraded to work).

Pentax lenses are backwards compatable for decades. Same for Nikon generally. Think Minolta are the same, although their first digital SLR (the RD3000) used the Vectis lenses, intended for the APS SLR camera.

Olympus came out with a whole new standard for their digital SLRs, and these cannot use older lenses.

Canon have now started using the EF-S lenses. These are a very slightly different mount and only fit the latest digital SLRs of theirs (300D, 350D and 20D). These are optimised for the small sensors used on most digital SLRs (smaller than a 35mm film). Sigma also make a few lenses which are digital only, although generally this just means that if used on a film SLR you get noticeable vignetting (dark corners).

Cameras that use the EF-S lenses can still use the EF lenses, but not the other way round.

Jayluvmito, can you take that picture out of your signature mate? Not saying that because it's not allowed (even though it isn't) but it's pretty annoying. Not that one in particular, jsut pictures clogging up the board.
