This is an email I recieved from a guy selling a CBR600RR on ebay:

Quote:
Hello there and thanks for your interest.
I'm very glad that you like my bike and I can only say
that you have good taste about bikes! The price I want
to obtain for it is £1,500 (this price includes
shippment and insurance charges).
The bike is like new, completely working, low miles,
2003 Honda CBR600RR model. It has always been garage
kept. It is an UK model with UK specs and will have no
problem registering there.
Shipping will be done via Pegasuscarrier Air Cargo
from Bratislava, Slovakia and it will take no more
then 4 days for the bike to arrive at the delivery
location. I am in the Military and Pegasuscarrier will
manage me a low price for shipping and if you will pay
the money transfer taxes, I will pay for the shipping
fees. I will arrange for you not to pay any duties
when the bike will pass through customs. In this way
the bike will be delivered to your home address. This
is a overseas purchase and I would like to use a third
party for this transaction as I want a smooth and safe transaction. We will use Square Trade, I have completed a lot of successful deals using them. I have a Purchase Protection Account for US $20,000 and I assume you know what this means. If this is your first time using Square Trade here are their terms: if you will not receive the bike exactly as advertised or you won't receive it in 15 days since you made the payment, Square Trade will refund you from my account.

If you agree with these terms, please reply with your
full name, home and shipping address in your next
email so I can register the transaction with Square
Trade asap.
Regards,

This is the bike on ebay: Click here to view.

This guy has been confirmed by Square Trade (a legitimate company) as not a member and therefore has never made any such trades through them before, even though he clearly states he has done!

He has been reported to ebay.

Like I said, he has been found out, please do not bid on this item, there probably is no CBR for sale and this is probably a bike he found picture of on the internet!

A message from Square Trade:

Quote:
Fraud Alert & Consumer Protection Tips

FRAUD ALERT: There are currently various attempts to defraud consumers
using SquareTrade and other trusted companies. Please read warnings below,
verify suspicious claims and be careful when making purchases online.

Beware of potential fake "spoof" emails that pretend to be an
authentic email from SquareTrade or other trusted companies.

SquareTrade Never Takes Payment on Behalf of a Seller:
Scam emails will often request the consumer to pay via a money
transfer service, such as Western Union or Money Gram, an escrow service, or
by money order. BEWARE! SquareTrade will NEVER act as an escrow agent for a
seller and will NEVER hold or transfer money on behalf of an auction or
seller.

Claims of Large Insurance Backing Are Usually Fraudulent:
Scam emails often make false claims that the seller is backed by a
large "protection account" or by 3rd party insurance or similar claims to
make you feel safe. Verify such claims directly with 3rd parties.

Beware of Fake Websites:
Beware that scam artists often create fake websites to look exactly
like trusted company websites that are linked to the scam emails. To help
prevent being defrauded by such tricks, always directly type into your web
browser the name of the business (e.g., www.squaretrade.com, www.ebay.com,
www.paypal.com, www.amazon.com) when you are verifying information with a
trusted website.

Verify Before You Pay:
If you have received one of these emails or are concerned about a
seller, DO NOT pay until you have verified a seller's claims.
1.. If claims relate to SquareTrade, forward the email and questions
to spoof@squaretrade.com, and wait until a SquareTrade representative
contacts you.
2.. If the claims relate to a specific ecommerce website purchase,
such as eBay, Amazon.com, Yahoo or craigslist.org, visit their website for
further information and send suspicious emails or questions to their
respective support teams (e.g., spoof@ebay.com, stop-spoofing@amazon.com,
auctions-abuse@cc.yahoo-inc.com,abuse@craigslist.org). These companies might
also have added buyer protection to cover some of your losses.

Use Secure Payment Methods:
We suggest NEVER using wire or money transfer methods, such as Western
Union or MoneyGram, money orders or personal checks, when paying an unknown
seller, as these forms of payment leave you with little or no recourse if
the transaction is fraudulent. Credit cards generally offer the highest
fraud protection for consumers. You should contact your credit card issuer
for more information.

Use caution and common sense: "Too good to be true" deals are often
fraudulent. Purchase responsibly and realize there are risks when buying
online from unknown sellers.

I've came across a few people claiming to be oversea's and selling bikes on ebay. As a general rule I would only buy a bike if i'd seen it and paid the person in cash! Too many rip off merchants on Ebay.

Anybody that bids on these scam bikes deserve to be dunked down a dirty toilet. There's been scam bikes on ebay for years.

If it seems too cheap to be true then it probalbly is.

I advertised mine on there and that wasn't a scam. I withdrew it from auction though when a private sale came along.

These scams will continue for as long as people fall for them, and its picking on people's greed and people who go to eBay without engaging their brain first. If something seems too good to be true then thats because it usually is, and there's not such thing as a free lunch.

As long as people are have more greed than they do common sense then there'll be scams around.

I might start posting up threads whenever I get an e-mail scam or when I see something dodgy on eBay. Smile

Not quite!!!

You can get a good deal on there though, the best thing to do is contact the seller and arrange to go and see the bike. If it's good make an offer and they'll usually take it as long as it's reasonable!!!

I noticed that the auction is now over, 5 days early, therfore it has actually been removed!

The response from Ebay:

Quote:
Hello,

Thank you for your reporting this email.

This email is attempting to complete a sale outside of eBay. Only items that are listed on a person's 'My eBay' page under the "Items I've Won" section are considered to be valid completed transactions. If you are not the winning bidder or listed on the bid history page, then you have not won this item.

Neither SquareTrade or eBay confirms that sellers or transactions are secure in emails or send emails that guarantee delivery or guarantee other members information. Please do not send this person any money.

It's important to know that items purchased outside of the eBay format are not eligible for our protective services such as feedback, dispute resolution, contact information requests and most importantly the Fraud Protection Program. These services are only available for items that are listed and purchased on eBay in compliance with our guidelines and listing policies.

For more information on this policy, please visit the link below:

https://pages.ebay.com/help/policies/solicitation-offsite-sale.html

While email solicitations for outside of eBay transactions are prohibited and are a violation of our user agreement, our initial review leads us to believe that the email you received may actually be the result of an unauthorized account takeover. We are now in the process of verifying the actual sender and will restore the account to its true owner if necessary.

In addition, we do not recommend the use of instant cash wire transfer services such as Western Union and MoneyGram, and we ask that users decline sending payment in cases where these are the only methods of payment offered by the seller. Generally, if payment is sent using an instant cash wire transfer service and the item is not delivered as promised, no recourse is available for recovering funds. In most cases, an escrow service should be used when purchasing high dollar value items. More information on the benefits and risks of individual payment methods can be found at:

https://pages.ebay.com/help/buy/payment.html

eBay urges caution when purchasing high-priced items, especially if the price seems too good to be true.

Also, if you have replied to their emails, it is suggested that you update your virus software definition files.

We appreciate your help and your commitment to keep eBay safe.

Regards,

Bella
eBay SafeHarbor
Investigations Team

So, it seems to have been a fraud after all!

I also noted the section that basically is saying don't use any instant money transfer system other than PayPal, which coincidentally happens to be owned by Ebay! Laughing

However, they are much more likely to be able to give the money back if you are ever conned!

Back to the watch lists, happy bidding folks!
