No, it's not a dodgy French wigger.

Speaking to a safety engineer from Ford today, he told me about a new body which has come about reasonably recently. It's a sister programme to EuroNCAP (consumer crash testing awarding stars for performance). Instead of being based on car safety, they're based on road safety.

They assess roads according to their risk and safety shortcomings, and suggest improvements to be engineered in to reduce the fatalities on said roads. They try to make sure that risk assessment is at the heart of routing improvements, crash protection and traffic movement.

All that can be nothing but good for motorists, drivers and riders alike, with hopefully fewer blind junctions and more attention brought to poor road design, hopefully stopping them from being so retarded in the future. Who hasn't discovered a junction which is at best confusing and at worse highly dangerous?

Anyway, the main thrust of this is that they publish risk ratings of all the British roads (as well as other EU countries). The road rated most dangerous in England, the A537 (Cat & Fiddle) is only rated so highly as a result of the number of motorcyclists crashing and dying on it.

Now, the sting in the tail is that since they've released these ratings, hordes of motorcyclists have been seeking out the most dangerous and difficult roads in the country to go and have fun on. Of course, the police presence has also rocketed on these roads, as have the numbers of speed cameras. Still, most of these rural roads simply won't have the funds to be altered, so I doubt our fun will be going very soon.
