The GSX400 motor really wasn't the best designed engine, its famed for overheating and seizing.
Get UBG and it tells you all about it in that.

With the GX Suzuki didn't quite get the oil supply right (this was also the case on one or two other models, most notably the GSX400F), and it was possible to strangle the oil supply to the big ends, when the oil level was low. The GZ cured this problem and also sported anti-drive forks and a fuel gauge.

Also if you really do want a bigger Katana go for the 550 or 650, much better and stronger engines in those!

Suspect that refers to the old style GSX engine. Think the Katana was a 90s replica with a 400 engine of the old original 80s Katana (and only the 1000 and 1100 from the 80s look like what most people would consider a Katana, and I still fancy a pop up headlight 750), and suspect it used a derivative of the Bandit 400 engine.

All the best

Ah, yes

As with the 250 Katana, the 400 is a much later introduction to the Suzuki range, and was primarily released to satisfy the current Japanese trend for 'retro' styled bikes and also to coincide with the re-release of the 1100 Katana. It is a faithful reproduction of the early bikes, even keeping the Suzuki 'star' spoke wheels that the early bikes had. The only noticeable difference is the Showa piggy-back twin shocks at the rear and Tokico 4 pot calipers at the front. Looking at the engine, you would be fooled into thinking that Suzuki had even kept the air cooling, in these liquid cooled days. You would of course be wrong, it is a cunning illusion, with the engine straight out of the GSX-R / Bandit 400.

Seems there was the later Katana 400.

Well if it's the 400 kat I got one any questions give me a buzz. The Engine is bullet proof. Thats why so may breakers have the engines and cdi units as they don't seem to go wrong.

But they are a fun bike.

If your in the south east PM me and may be we can meet up to discuss bikes.
