Just been out for a ride along my favourite local twisties and had it spoiled by annoying cage drivers! Now I know that they have just as much right to be there as me but why do they insist on doing 35mph in a national speed limit area!? Evil or Very Mad And being on a low powered bike ment I was unable to overtake, that and the fact that there are no overtaking opportunities. This kind of thing happen to any other people? This is my only day off aswell so I'm extremely annoyed! (rant over)

Go out and do it again! Smile

I no longer have those overtaking issues, although I can empathise from my time on my 400.

Better luck next time!

They were probably only doing 35mph as there are lots of low powered bikes on the roads slowing everything down. Wink

If you're not able to go faster (if you could go faster, you could overtake them given a small straight bit of road) then they are then surely there isn't any problem?

To be fair im on a 600, and unless you like russian roulette style overtakes you have to be very careful on all bits of twisties where you overtake, sometimes i get stuck behind the wankers. For example coaches etc that decide to take country lanes and cut all the corners Evil or Very Mad
Not to mention if you are doing 40 and they are doing 35, thats 5mph difference and you have to get past a moving car, i cant be arsed with the maths, but thats at least 5 seconds in the oncoming lane, so youd need a pretty large straight.

What i used to do when on lower powered bikes was wait at the top or bottom and give about a minute between the last car and when i went down/up it. Or really slow down on a straight and let them piss off, then drive again. Youd be surprised how much ground theyll make in 20 seconds of just waiting on a roadside. Thumbs Up

There's a knack to overtaking. I can overtake cars doing 35mph in a 1.3 hyundai accent on the twisties. You've just got to give a good gap and know when there's a straight coming, and time it right. If you've got a gap you can start to get your speed up in advance before the chance occurs. If it is your favourite road, then you should know where all the good chances to overtake are.

As a contribution to the topic of favourite routes being spoiled....

What really pisses me off is when the feckin local council have a panic and spend all their yearly budget on chucking down 50 tons of grit on the road and call it 'Resurfacing'

This invariably happens just as the weather is getting better, and nearly always on perfectly good roads with absolutely no poor surface issues.

They make a half hearted effort to roll the gravel into the road, but most of it just loiters on the surface acting as ball bearings. I've recently found one of my favourite roads subjected to this treatment, 'twil be a long time before I can ride it like I used to.

Shit.

Yes, but thats when you get over optimistic and head butt a car. I can get past anything if i want to throw caution well to the hurricane. But these days i try not to go too manic if possible.

My favourite route the A30 from Yeovil to Chard has been ruined by unnecessary speed limits. There is a lovely twisty section on top of the hills but now that is limited to 50MPH, the tiny hamlets now get a 30 or 40MPH speed limit.

Never bothered me on my ped, but now I have the power and speed available to me it gets frustrating.

lol. I can go alot faster than they were going, but this road is very difficult to overtake on, narrow, oncoming trafic etc, and I consider myself to be quite good at judging overtakes.

Speed limits in built up areas are not always unnecessary. I made a post a while ago about a horrible pair of junctions in the village where I live. When the speed limit was 60, you'd be taking your life into your hands when you pulled out of the junction. You just couldn't see far enough down the road to make sure nothing was coming. At 60, the traffic would be upon you much faster than you realised. It was probably a contributory factor to me crashing at one of the junctions.

Since they reduced the limit to 40, things are much more civilised; people don't see fit any longer to just do whatever speed they think is safe.

Stopping for a minute or two, or if it's not too busy, just bimbling along at 10-20 for a while is normally sufficient to let them get away a bit.

My old favourite haunt now has 3 new gatsos recently put up. Thumbs Down

Still, know what you mean regarding following slower vehicles on some nice twisties. The knack is to carry your speed as you approach the vehicle you wish to overtake, rather than slow behind it then try to overtake. As it's your favourite route then you really should know the places where overtaking is safest.

Very Happy

Take it that is the bit just before Codsall Wood? It is about to get worse as they are doing the road from the Bradford Arms to Wheaton Aston today, probably the newest and best condition road I use on a regular basis.

They have also done a bit of the A518 that I use most days.

Vandals.

All the best
