Hey guys n gals, if i have posted this in the wrong section i'll say sorry in advance.
Basically i've tryed to sell my scooter in the sentinel and after shelling out £30 for 3 nights and not even a phone call i think i'll have to resort to trading my Piaggio NRG MC3 (bought August last year) into the local bike shop. I know this is foolish due to the price he has offered me - £750! the fecking cheek but he is selling a 02 reg cg125 for £1200 round about and it seems to be immaculate. I've done my research on the bike and understand it's reliable and a good bike but knowing me i will get tired of the speed quickly. I've been told 75mph but other sites have said less... Also what performance tweaks e.t.c could be done to it? and can the engine be rebored without nackering the bike? It will be my first bike so any help on this would be greatly appreciated,

If you want a 125 to go quickly, get a two stroke. The CG will do 65 at the outside.

Performance modifications on a four stroke 125 are reasonably pointless, the very small gains will be completely out of proportion with the money you'd need to spend.

You can get 125's far cheaper than £1200. I foolishly made the mistake of getting one for a grand + delivery. Scour Ebay and local papers etc, and you should be able to get a middle aged 125 for £500-700. Treat the 125 as a stepping stone on which to practise for a year or however long until you do your test. Don't spend a lot of money on it, but save the difference for tests, insurance etc for a larger bike.

You get a lot more big bike for your money than you get 125 for your money.

Like mchaggis has said, trying to gain a bit more performance out of it really is rather pointless and costly.

I mean you could spend xx amount of cash getting it go a shade faster but sooner or later the brakes will not be able to cope and will need updating, then the frame and possibly suspension.

Best bet is to get something half quick in the first place or just learn on it and get the test out the way and the money you would of spent trying to get these small under powered machines to go faster could be spent on a bigger performance orientated machine when the time is right.

Stick it in a free ads paper(Loot?). How much are you advertising it for? If you're willing to take less than it's worth from a dealer, try putting it in for less than it's worth in the paper/ But slightly more than the dealer would give you; It's all money in your pocket Thumbs Up

I sold my 51reg cg125 for £680. It was worth more, but I got it cheap so I was happy to sell it cheap in order to sell it quickly. Mine wasn't mint but the paint and chrome were almost so an inexperienced buyer may have missed the few bad points. Still, I have no reason to believe it wont be running fine for another decade or so. If you're after a cg125 you'll be better off with an older scruffier bike than something that's mint, because neither is likely to have any mechanical problems.

Get something cheap and get it quickly, as it becomes a sellers market once the sun is out regularly

My CG is an 04 four stroke...
will do 75 mph

Cheap fuel, (runs about a fortnight to and from work...9 miles daily.. on about a tenner)...
good, reliable....
nice bike.

A good buy that won't let you down.

My CG will hit 65 on a long, flat straight and will just hit 70 downhill. Doesn't seem like it could possibly do 75, but since it was made for the Japanese market it only has 4 gears Rolling Eyes .

It has a rev meter, and I believe the newest model has disc brakes. Oh, for disc brakes...

Rear disc: Just gonna make it easier to lock up the rear wheel really. No need for it on a slow bike.

Tacho: There's no power band on the bike and you're not likely to damage the engine by over-revving so no need for one. Maybe a slight plus.

Fairings: Very expensive when you drop the bike and they need to be replaced. Wind protection isn't really that important at 60mph.

Liquid cooling: Just more to worry about going wrong and slightly more maintanance. Doubt a cg125 would ever overheat in this country.

Maybe the price difference when new isn't that large, but try and pickup a cbr125 for less than a grand. Get an older cheaper cg125 then laugh when you sell it a year later after having passed your test, for the same amount that you payed for it Thumbs Up

Agreed on the drum brake, better for a learner as they also work in the wet, unlike discs Rolling Eyes. I also have a bike with no tacho or gear indicator, it is a tad more difficult, but you will find it infinatly easier later on in your biking career having ridden wthout them.
