The time has finally come to change the oil on my CG125! I tootled down to Halfords and was overwhelmed by the choice. I wan't sure whether to get fully synthetic or mineral oil - which is best?

Since the CG has a very old engine design I guessed it was probably best to stick with old-school so I went for mineral oil, but can go back to switch my choice this evening if necessary.

Hmm.

Mineral oil will be fine.
Synthetic oil is really only for high performance bikes.

Thanks! Although I worked in Halfords myself a few years back as a summer job and therefore, unless I was a one-off, they hire people who know nothing (and in my case, I mean NOTHING!!) about cars (let alone bikes) Wink

So I normally don't bother asking Halford's staff - although I'm sure you're the exception that proves the rule, short_ass Smile

Everready - that's kind of what I was hoping you'd say (especially as mineral is cheaper!) although a CG engine probably gets worked harder than a superbike engine as it's so tiny. Mineral it is then. Not sure which brand of mineral I should use though - Evian, Volvic or Tescos own brand? Laughing

apparently most 'synthetics' sold at Halfords and the like aren't proper fully synthetics like Motul and others, so I guess they will be fine in the CG. Thats what I put in anywhy Castrol from Halfords about £7 quid, fine by me.

Bog ordinary Castrol GTX 10W40 (not Magnatech!) works absolutely fine. 5 litres for £15-20 IIRC.

What does that mean ?
If you go in and buy fully synthetic you don't get what you ask for ?

Bike was in for 600 mile service today and asked what they use, they said for a bike like a Bandit you don't need fully synth instead they use semi synth as fully synth can give quite a lot of clutch slip. Smile
