Hi everyone.........
If you can help it would be appreciated.
The wife has a full car license for 20 years and is now bored with pillion and wants to ride a bike. Clearly she s entitled to ride provisional on a bike up to 125cc. But does anyone know if she needs CBT, also supposing she passes a test what can she ride at that point?
Any help appreciated...................Phil

CBT is well worth doing, even if you don't legally need it (you sure about the 125 thing, I thought old car licences only gave 50cc rights?).

What she can ride after doing her test depends on which test she takes. Check out the sticky post at the top of this forum for all the guff on which test is which.

Hello,

She is currently entitled to ride a 50cc with provisional entitlement. After CBT she can ride up to 125cc with a maximum power output of 11kW (14.6bhp) with provisional entitlement.

After the standard A2 test on a bike of 120-125cc and capable of more than 100 kph (62.5mph), she will be entitled to ride any motorcycle up to 25kW (33 bhp) and with a power to weight ratio not exceeding 0.16kw/kg with a two year qualifying period for the full license entitlement.

Obviously, after the direct access test, taken on a motorcycle of at least 35kW (46.6 bhp), she would have full entitlement from the off.

Hope that helps.

Hi

With a car licence that long I think it counts as a full moped licence. Fairly certain she still needs to do CBT to ride a bike of over 50cc.

All the best

Keith

Check out the following which may help in making things a little clearer.

https://www.dvla.gov.uk/drivers/rdmcycle.htm#1.%20Changes%20to%20the%20UK%20Learner%20Motorcycle%20Specification

To be more specific.quoted below(Taken from the DVLA website)

Quote:
The requirement to complete CBT does not apply to those riders who are:

learning to ride a motorcycle and who have already obtained full moped entitlement as a result of passing a moped test on or after 1 December 1990, or

riding a moped with full entitlement given automatically with a full car licence.

If your wife has had a full Driving licence for that length of time, FULL Moped entitlement would have been given after her driving test, while Provisional for Motorcycle. She can ride a 50cc without L's, and would also be able to ride up to a 125 (provisionally) on L's. She whon't have to take a CBT, though it is recommended.

If you still have got the paper license, Moped Licence is stated under the 'National Catorgories' where P is the Moped licence. CAT A should be listed under the provisional entitlement.

Acwman, you are wrong. Information like that could put people in danger.

Provissional would probalbly have been included on her licence but she still needs her CBT.

A quote from the page you linked to, at the very top Confused

Quote:
You must complete compulsory basic training [CBT] before riding a moped or motorcycle (with or without sidecar) on the road.

She will need to take a CBT.

This is only applicable to people who actually took their full test on a moped (why???). She would also need to take another theory test, your wife would be best doing her Direct Access test, upon passing that she could ride any capacity/power motorbike.

Hope this helps
