Other than the recommendations of others - especially in here - how else is there to help you decide on a bike?

CBT tomorrow. Looking for a trail bike. But after that - other than looks etc. How do you really know if you will really like a bike until after you have bought it? I guess test rides are out of the question?

ps. somebody told me tonight - the main people at risk on a bike are people aged 17 to 25. If you survive til yer 25 then you settle down and yer safe. The other people mainly at risk are those that take it up when they get to 40. Well that really cheered me up seeing as I'm 39. Sad

Speak to other people who own them. Look on the web at any owners club message boards to see what goes wrong with them. Sit on one to make sure you fit the bike and the bars/pegs are in a comfy position. Look in some magazines for reviews, the best one used to be Used Motorcycle Guide which is sadly out of print now, it consisted of a buyers guide and articles sent in by bike owners.

Here is what it says about the DT125:

Quote:
Usefull trail bike mostly used on the road that can be upgraded to 26hp- somewhat peaky and the piston can go, although the stock engine's more reliable than the old DT125LC. Popular with learners; some burnt out the clutch and had poor gear change action. Finish dubious but mechanicals not bad.

That is not a bad review by UMG standards, they call a spade a spade.

The nearest replacment for UMB is used bike guide which still has a buyers guide but is more sports-bike orientated, so they will slate a bike because it isn't fast enough when it does its job perfectly well.

EDIT:
As to your statistics for older bikers being at-risk. This is more people who did their test when they were young, had 25 years away from biking then go out and buy a flashy sports bike when the kids are grown up. Their flashy sports bike has four times the power and weighs half as much as the old BSA starfire they used to ride and they come a cropper.

You are doing the training from scratch so I wouldn't worry Wink
