On my way back from the BMF in the pissing rain today, pulled up at some lights next to another bike.
I open my visor, give him a nod and say "Lovely day for it".
He replies "Yep, glorious." and rides off.
I was pissing myself. ____________________ <Simple> no I'm shaven Jon

I'm a sucker for nodding. Nod at everything, even the pizza guys (Though they never nod back)
This is what I find
People that nod : People in leathers, people with modded bikes, people who are cool and other randomers.
People that don't nod : Long bearded 'Free Spirits', Half helmet wearing vespa riding morons and Ped bois (It seems if you nod at them they think you are trying to start a fight and nearly crash into the car ahead of them whilst glaring at you until their neck has reached its maximum turning angle.)
A weird thing is, since I got my ZXR and am riding in my green leathers and green helmet, a lot more people nod me first, whereas before it was me initiating the nods. I quite like it. If they knew it was a long haired 18 year old teenager under the lid I wonder if they would do the same ____________________ My NSR --> https://members.boards.ie/instinct/Diagonal.jpg

ok then - what's your nod style?
I tend to go for a twisting nod, kind of dropping my head and twisting it to one side. Feels like that's more noticable than just a straight nod. ____________________ <Simple> no I'm shaven Jon

wierd actually...don't get many nods in west london unless it's a modded bike or the riders wearing a tinted visor. On country roads however it's a different story.
I'm like white noise. A quick sideways movement towards the rider...almost like when you stretch your neck muscles...or when you're in the pub and a cheeky little female walks in, it's like "ere' lads, 'ave a look at that" (nodding your head in the direction of her) |

I find the nodding deteriorates the further you get into London...on my journey to work in the morning, I usually see the same guy going in the opposite direction on the local road and we both nod...if I see any more bikers on local roads we both tend to nod...getting on the motorway, riders will nod if you move out of the way (assuming you're going slower), I'll nod if someone lets me pass...upon reaching junction 4, however, everyone stops nodding, even after the motorway and onto local roads into central London...the number of nods I've had in central London can be counted on the fingers of one hand, a hand that has had an accident with a stapler and currently has only 2 fingers!...
Weekend nodders are more prevalent, but the guy that usually only goes out on Sunday afternoon if the weather is good is usually fully gripped onto the handlebars and is so intent on not crashing in his own lane (even though they're tailgating the car in front), the fact that another biker is going in the opposite direction never crosses his mind
When I go out with a mate, I'm usually behind him as he's just recently passed, and gets a bit 'funny' with cars that drive up his backside 'coz he's on a bike', and I find that bikers going the opposite way will nod me more often than him.
I'm a flick head to side, trying to touch my shoulder with my ear nodder...I find it easier to see ahead, and its easier for the guy going the other way to see you've nodded rather than just gone over a bump in the road...
Alex. |

well i'll nod to anyone, it'd be ignorant not to..
anyway a nod hasn't turned intop a convo yet, although last year i did have a conversation with a bus driver when i was on my NS125.. musta lasted about 4-5mins in slow moving traffic.. can't remember what we were talknig about, nevertheless, it was a bike related convo. |

The good thing i think about the nod is, NOTHING matters if im riding along a route say to work and i see a biker and nod to him and he nods back. i know if i see him again i can nod and he will nod back, yet we know nothing about each other. he could be a rapist a burglar or worse, a traffic copper. (joking). But nothing matters about who you are what you do or even really what you ride. It could be the guy you hated all through school or anything Nodding is one of the best parts of biking IMO, but then again i ride a 125 ____________________ Bah Humbug |

Its nnoying when your riding along and a convoy of 4 or 5 bikes are coming towards you, the 1st rider will nod, I nod back, then the others follow suit, I feel like a nodding dog!!
On many occasions I've stopped at lights and struck up a small conversation. If it's pissing down, the usual comments of "nice day for it" occur, but more often than not, I get bikers asking what size my Gixxer is... "is it a 6?".
Frustratingly, 99% or Harley riders and generally anyone NOT on a sports bike, do not nod back when I nod them... I feel like a loser! |

I often swap a few words at the lights, only the conversation mostly encompasses me going "Eh? Say that a bit louder, I've got me earplugs in!"
The other week I was sitting at some roundabout lights chatting to a chap on an R1 who was complimenting my paint job. Lights changed, we pulled off, white van man jumped his lights, we braked quite a lot, next set of lights was spent cussing him, then we both exited the roundabout on to a dual carriageway (I went first) and the next thing I know, he's passing between me and a car on his back wheel! He dropped the front for another car, then lifted it again for another half mile down the road!! ____________________ My Bikepics page
