This is one thing that confusses me, harleys can have straight though pipes, so is it a legality issue on noise that sports bikes have to have cans on or is it for backpressure for such a performance engine?

if it was a bac pressure issue why would gp bikes not have a can on it only 2t that would have that prob as the valves in a 4t give u the back pressure as far as i know

I guess Harleys with straight throughs are either not road legal, or, the low revving, low compression, twin cylinder engine results in not much noise compared to a high revving, high compression jap engine?

do not run your bike without a end can unless the jetting has been altered to suit, or the bike will run lean and sezie.

What, with a broken exhaust system? My mates Speedfight exhaust snapped once, and when he was riding it, he could barely hit 45mph. And this Speedfight was 70cc'd, Leo Vince pipe, 21mm carb, variator adjusted so its in the powerband all the time and he had a gear up kit. And with a snapped pipe, he managed 45mph. Usually does around 70. So how did you manage to do 80 with a snapped pipe?

There is no way you will be able to get any kind of performance out of a 2-stroke with a broken pipe, a 2-stroke is dependant on the exhaust, it needs to be there.

I was tempted to try and see what my bike sounded like with no can when I was fitting the micron system I got as far as switching the key on and hovering my thumb above the starter I just wanted to see what it would sound like but I realised the engine was cold and thought hmmm if the engine was warm I could give it a quick squirt of the throttle to have a listen but since it is cold I wont bother warming it up and just fitted the system up and fired her up once I had done it, still, it would be nice to have a sneak peek at it though hey Mr. Green

Hi

Plenty of 2 strokes have run without silencers, just that the Moto GP bikes have relaxed noise rules compared to the older 2 strokes. Doing so without making sure everything is set up correctly is asking for trouble though.

And all those noisy Harley exhausts are illegal.

All the best

Keith

A lot of the pipes which look straight through actually go through a silencer anyway. It looks like a conventional car silencer but sits just in front of the rear wheel. Finglonga's bike has one similar from the looks of it.

Not a silencer but the CAT, which is a hell of a silencer in its own right. However it is not as restrictive as a legal end can as the gasses pass straight through it and not back and forth through baffled chambers.
The MOT examiners were quite suprised on how quiet it is.

Oh and the CAT has this on it...
