About a year ago I aquired a set of lock picks off the internet and spent a few days reading up on how to use them. I scared myself when I realised how easily I could get into my house, start my bike, open various padlocks with nothing more than a few bits of metal. It took about 10 seconds to unlock and start my Firestorm with a flathead screwdriver and two paperclips

Is is this easy on all round shaped key locks? Cos the only lock I have which isnt of this type is my disk lock.

Well I have heard that the 'older 16 pin kryptonite locks have this problem. However, The newer models have 24 pin locks that are supposed to be better.... at least according to our friends at RiDE mag.

That clips got me intrigued, I had cause to removed quite a few locks from cycles, and normally end up with the "hit it with a very large hammer" technique!

Next time have to remove one, I'm going to have a closer look.

i tried my cheapo £5 disk lock and i cant get it open broken quite a few pens

still got to be worth trying all you locks with circular keys if it is a what the chavy picky scum stealing bike can do

I once had a 'friend' with a fizzie. People found out you could start it with nought more then a locker key and since it was locked people would just leave it running over lunch time

Oh Fantastic locks!! I'll bet the bums that stole my gixxer feel stupid as they had to pick it up and set it in the bed of their pickup,and to think all they needed was pen to roll it around......

There's a feature in RiDE this month about the issue - they opened a sample of seven out of eight Oxford locks using a pen. They tried locks from a range of other suppliers and couldn't get any open, though apparently there are some Kryptonite locks that are affected, hence Kryptonite offering to exchange them (www.kryptonite.com).

Apparently the issue is that the pins inside the lock are all set at different heights - the pins on the Oxford ones are all quite similar while other makers have more variation, thus making it harder to pick them. Have a look at your key and see if the grooves are all about the same length - if they are, your lock might be susceptible to the pen trick and you should perhaps think about changing it.

Had my UPS stuff through so i can return my lock. Not 100% sure what i'm ment to being doing with the bits they've sent me though....

UPDATE -

Went home for the weekend and there was a nice new lock waiting for me. Old style circular key now replaced by a flat type.
