Just got my sump back, helicoiled, after near as damn 2 months.
Missed loads of beautiful days out, missed approximately 1 hour of every morning lesson in that time (3x1x8= 24 hours of college before my exam) because my mum is dog useless at lifts. Have no independence etc, so as you can tell im a bit uppety about getting back on it.
Now heres the fun bit, i killed it originally by ripping the thread out of the sump plug being an over unthusiastic bumbling cock. 8 weeks later as i say, it comes back. Much hassle getting new gaskets, wasted 40 quid on oil from it pissing out etc, took ages getting a new gasket, only had the bike a month etc.
Now today, got sump plate back, cleaned off gasket, thought i'll stick it back on. Cleaned it all out, GLEAMING, white spirit on all surfaces, cleaned that off, re oiled it, cleaned that off to get a good seal etc. Gasket on bosh, spent an hour pain stakingly putting it back on without a torque wrench (:Roll:). Due to my paranoia about bolts dropping out i was trying to tighten it up a fair bit, but i now have a huge fear of threading. Done it all. Thought sod it go round em all again just because they still FELT loose. This is with one finger on a roughly 8inch socket bar thing so no great torque to it. Snap... Bolt looking like a twiglet drops out. Never mind thinks i, its all tight and its not coming off any time soon, you're an idiot but nothing untoward /should/ happen. But to be safe i'll top it up with a litre of oil to check it still holds fine. Then i think sod it, fill it all up so it's ready to run. Do that (£25 quid of oil) , happy days, no leaks.
Go to walk away, notice the foil on the side... INSTANTLY remember i took out the fucking bastard mother fucking oil pick up strainer 'to be safe' incase it dropped out, and to give it a clean.
So now im left with the conundrum, wait another week for new gasket (£10) and spend another 2 hours cleaning off the gasket (i loathe that with a passion... its now the number one worst job in bike maintenance)/risk it with the just fitted allready compressed one, piss away another £25 quid oil/attempt to drain it back into the container, risk breaking the bike in all new ways next time i do it, run the risk with this shagged bolt that it wont compress properly this time...
Or
Leave it as it is, risk a blockage in the oil lines/engine which will cause the fucking swine to seize, probably while doing silly speeds and have me off, or at least invalidate the warranty and therefore land me permanently with no bike unless i can cheekily get it home and changed FUCKING quick.
How invaluable to running is it, assuming i keep the oil clean, and at the next oil change put it in... all though considering getting the sump plate off is an absolute mission so i doubt i would get to it in the time i own it.
I know what i should do, but i just cant face it right now, and i also cant face being without a bike through the exams.
What would you guys, taking ^ that into account,
Sorry for length, swearing and all else, but im fighting back the urge for a mammoth bender culminating in hospital or a cell, but either way it will involve copious amounts of green which im avoiding due to exams (one of which i had today, hence stressing). From your description you haven't actually run the bike any distance yet. You should be able to drain the oil into a clean container, take the plate off, replace the bit you forgot and reassemble everything again.
I doubt the gasket will have stuck to anything yet, providing you don't tear it, I bet it will still seal.

Yeh it hasnt moved... Still got no rad or downpipes on it. You have a serious obsession with cornflake gaskets lol.
I know whats involved, but the main three questions in laymans from tha huge sprawl of a whinge were
a) Will it kill it not being in there
b) Will it seal ok minus the one bolt of 10 ish
c) Can i reuse the gasket even though it has been compressed and so lost the sealent... Its only been on 45 minutes tops. ____________________ China traffic/travel bike vid - When I make a sweeping statement, please add the word 'statistically' in to the sentence before you bitch...

Hi
You should not reuse paper gaskets, but at worst it will just leak a bit (probably little or not at all).
I would be dubious about running it without the strainer. Chances of a problem are small, but in the event of a problem (for example if the clutch basket breaks up) then the rubbish will go straight into the oil pump and trash it before the oil filter has a chance to catch it.
Not sure of the design, but on your bike will the missing screen affect the height of the oil pickup? If so you could have major problems.

There we have it then. And while you have it off, you might be able to get hold of the stump on the bolt you snapped off too.
By the way, an 8" long socket wrench is a pretty fearsome tool to be tightening up what I assume are M5 set screws. I would normally use nothing longer than an allen key or my 1/4" drive socket set which must have a 4" long handle. All to easy to shear something with an overly large wrench.
Next time, just do what the torque wrench says, they did not print those numbers in the book to fill in space. They will have been worked out by a proper engineer and everything  ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That's when things happen. It was gone ten, my dad was whinging about working at night in poor light etc... Plus im happy to leave it as is. So the stump stays... It can be a mascot or summit. Its got 11 bolts out of 12, i think thats liveable. I will keep an eye out though. Any signs of a leak and its a clean with white spirit around the edge then crammed with insti-gasket round the entire edge.
Thanks for kicking me into doing it, took about 45 minutes. I think i owe you a pint... i'll add that to my long list
One plus point, i found out how fab the helicoil my mate did to my sump is, didnt let out a DROP until the bolt was all the way out. True the oil was cold ergo thick. But still. Impressive.
Gasket came off fine, bit oil covered though... Not sure if thats a good sign, wiped it off anyway.
As for the 8 inch socket... yes its a bit huge. I used my ratchet socket this time which is only about 6inch's and it felt a lot less vague. But then again i only had to tweak the bolts to get them loose, after doing them all up to just below snapping torque...
Trial will come when i run it, which sadly wont come till downpipes and coolant/rad are back on/in.
