I just phoned a bloke about an NSR I saw in the local paper. It is advertised for £700, but it failed its MOT on the chain being too tight and a bearing in the swingarm has gone. Does anyone have any idea how much these repairs will cost?
I'm going to see the bike tomorrow night, I'll tell you more about it when I get back!

Cheers,

Hi

The chain isnt (in theory) an MOT test point, but they can still fail it under the "anything else the tester believed makes the vehicle dangerous". If the chain and sprockets are ok then fixing this is just a simple adjustment. Watch out as an overtightened chain can wreck the bearing behind the front sprocket (known problem with the old FZ/FZR engines, not sure if the NSR is prone to this).

Swinging arm bearings should be fairly cheap, and can be fitted by any competent mechanic. However, that does mean removing the swinging arm which is likely to be an hour or two labour. Also check they mean the swinging arm bearings, not the rear suspension linkage bearings. These are prone on almost any monoshock bike to seizing up. Budget on around £50 to £100 parts to fix this, plus any labour

All the best

Keith
