Why are they mandatory for racing? How can you loose your toes in the chain? and how does a little bit of aluminium covering the back of the chain stop this?

They reduce the chances of you getting small and delicate appendages into that space between chain and sprocket by being in the way.
People can fall off in all kinds of strange contorted ways.
Apparently the ACU-approved footpegs have ends thicker than the gap between the average person's ribs. That was a fact Jay shared last night, that I didn't really want to think about.  |
