hey all,

DUI when it works is soo satisfying..

turns out 1&4 not firing wasnt the coils.. i checked the coil, the wiring all the way to the tci and the pickups.... got depressed cos i didnt know what frikkin tool i had to use to get the damn pckup cover over.... so poked around with a multimeter in the tci.. and ws running out of ideas of what to check when i decided to check the ht leads.
and one of them was broken.. yippee...
so cut and replaced it and the baby runs a lot better..

still not full power.. and 1&4 header pipes get warmer than before.. I had cleaned the sparks.. but i dont know how good it was.. i cleaned with sandpaper as it was all oily and the plug was looking rather disgusting.

1. I have new plugs but i haev no means to check the gap other than a visual approximate comaprison. Is that alright for sometime?

2. Also i screw it on manually.. I never really understood what 1/4 twist meant.. is that like 90 degrees which would make the plugs really tight. So what happens if the tightness is nto corect?

and hey thanks to all who helped.. stinky, keith etc especially and everyone else.

If they're not in tight enough there's the possibility they could be blown out Shocked Not sure how likely this is, but I wouldn't fancy risking it...

I've never really bothered with plug gaps and my plugs have always been fine.

Make sure you screw them in quite tight though, especially if they are new as they have a washer on them that needs to be squashed down to make a good seal with the cylinder head.

I forgot to tighten up the sparkplug on my nsr125 a few months back, I had just pinched it up gently and not cranked it right up for some reason which escapes me now. Confused I rode it for a few miles, probably about 30 or so before the bike started to sound a bit odd. It seemed down on power and I only really noticed it when I was going up a really steep, winding mountain road. I got to the top and stopped the bike to check it over. When I looked at the spark plug it was hanging onto the engine by its last 1 or 2 threads! The bike was still running like this! Bloody ridiculous, but that's a honda for you. Razz

You'll probably be ok with the gap, 4-strokes and CDI ignitions are not so fussy, you would have to get it right with a points ignition 2-stroke though. They are usually set to 20 thou" from the box which is generally about right (well any NGK plug I have used has been).

Assuming they are brand new plugs with compression washers, I usually put them in finger tight then tighten them another 90 degrees using a plug spanner. This makes the compression washer squash down by the right amount and is a more accurate way of tightening threads than a torque wrench (a 90 degree turn tightens the plug down the threads by a fixed distance regardless of any muck in the thread, how oily they are etc.) . In any case, a 1/4 turn off finger tight shouldn't strip anything that wasn't already broken.

Glad to hear you are making progress.
