 |
|
Hi folks just to let you know another Ebay Scam is on the go.
It has been taken off by Ebay but it might resurface so be aware.
It is for a 2003 CBR600RR, nice and shiny red one. The address was 61 Willing Street, England (that narrows it down a bit) .
It was Buy now for £1500.00, funnily enough the pics looked American.
Also be careful of the latest Phone scam.
You will recieve a call saying you have won a price and to press 9 on your phone to be put through to the prize line, you will be charged £20.00 for this, they then get you to go to another number and charge you £50.00. If you get one of these calls hang up straight away.
Cheers

That sucks! And it's not your fault, it's dead easy to get taken in by ebay. I got ripped off for a tenner by some guy using the same method - not nearly as bad, but I was still annoyed about it.
How did you get the money to him? If you posted it somewhere, surely you can track him down through that address. And is it possible to find out where a bankers draft was cashed - or better still, which bank account it was paid into?
However I still think that posting someone's address + details of their bike on a hunch that it's a scam is a bad idea. Why would someone post their address if it was a scam, unless they come from the Numpty School of Scammers©...??
-edit- | Quote: | I don't think that's a major issue, look again at the address. |
Hmmm. Now I realise that I, in fact, am the numpty. ____________________ Current: Yamaha Diversion XJ900

Except that it's probably not his real name....
Did you try and track him down through his mobile phone? At the very least, the mobile companies keep records of which base stations his mobile logged onto and made calls from, so even if he gave false details you should still be able to track down where he lives to within a couple of square miles. Then just go round knocking on doors until you find the plonker.
Alternatively, contact the store where he brought the phone, and find out whether he ever bought top-up credits, he might have used a card to pay for them.
Alternatively, try and find out where the bankers draft ended up. It might still have finger prints on it, although that is a bit of a long shot, and any chance of CCTV footage of him cashing it would be long gone. I assume he wasn't stupid enough to pay it into his bank account.
Just get inventive, there's got to be a way of tracking him down...

They won't give it out to anyone who asks, because of the Data Protection Act. But if you force them to by getting a court order (costing about £50 if you do it yourself in the small claims court) they have no choice. Of course, the police might just ask Orange to release the info to them and give it to you, if you asked them to.
PS Beastrider - if the police say "they'll investigate it" what they mean is, they'll use your file as a door-stop or as a handy donut resting point when their hands get too full of donuts to hold any more (not including the policemen on this site, who I am sure are hard-working, upstanding individuals!). But seriously, if you want to solve this, you'd need to do it yourself. Also have you thought about using a tracing agency? I temped over the holidays in a law firm which sued bankrupt people, and they would use these agencies to track down the naughty bankrupts who would invariable try and run off, but these agencies have contacts inside mobile companies and so forth who they milk to get relevant details. It's uncanny how they do it (also highly illegal I suspect) but give them a name, a description, some basic details to start with, and £50-£200 (depending on how hard you want them to try) and they come back to you in a couple of weeks with an address, and if you want it, details of how many times the guy has emptied his bins that week.
Have you contacted your bank to find out where + how the bankers draft was cashed? That might give you a clue.
I suspect ultimately the trail will run cold, as you don't know what the guy looks like, but if it was me, I'd want to exhaust every opportunity. ____________________ Current: Yamaha Diversion XJ900

Don't know why it is always a CBR600RR. Last Time the bike was Black with two free helmets. The time before that it was Blue.
Think there was a post on here before about a similar bike that had fancy paintwork and was in Glasgow, but the guy said he was in Ukraine or someplace like that and he would have the bike shipped out at his costs. OK RIGHT THEN!!!!!!!!!
Cheers
