Just wondering if someone might know when it reopens, as as far as I am aware its been closed since october last year. And still is as I tried to go up it yesterday only to be faced with loads of diversion signs.

Surely when ever there doing to it wshouldn't take this long?

You haven't had much luck have you.

Next time you go and its closed, theres an alternative road which is much better than the fiddle...its the macclesfield - whaley bridge - buxton road.

i highly reccomend it!

The A5009? I rode it last time it was shut, good road although could do with being resurfaced.

I like it more than the cat and fiddle because the bends arent blind like most of those on the fiddle!

depending on where your coming from, the roads around chapel-en-le frith are pretty cool, but they tend to get annoyingly congested around rush hour, great for a midday blast though!

Another one that's been a couple of times in within the past month there, it's been open for ages Craig! Doesn't actually mean your bothering to meet some members for a ride does it? Razz

Then why are the closed/diversion signs still there or Macclesfield MBC and the highways agency being lazy and not taking them down?

I rode the route in massive wind only a couple of weeks ago. Sounds like you happen to go up there when someone has had a bad crash!

I've done the Cat about 4 or 5 times this year - Deffinately not closed.

I can't find the A5009 anywhere on my map, but the road i've taken to Macclesfield from Chapel/WhaleyBridge is the B5470, which I quite enjoyed. You can also then use the A624 to get to/from Glossop and the snake pass Thumbs Up I wouldn't go all the way to Sheffield though - I've only done that part once a fair while ago, but I don't remember it being anywhere near as good as the bit between Glossop and the Ladybower resevoir

I don't really think the Cat n Fiddle has too many blind bends... The section on the Buxton side overlooking that rocky stream below is a different story though Shocked I find the Snake Pass to be very scary as it's a faster road.

Is it just me or do English roads not have actual road names and just go by thier number?

For example in Northern lreland all roads are known as thier names such as the Antrim Road whereas you english go on about "the A5892"

The Cat and Fiddle road isn't closed - I've just been up there and had a pretty smart Friday afternoon blast ! What a great road. Lovely warm weather too. In fact, conditions were perfect.

Parts of it looked like they had been resurfaced very recently, so maybe this was the reason for the closures. Work is still underway in some places, with the surface stripped and loose chippings flying. They are getting it ready for this summer's riding !

In conversation, people usually call it the Cat and Fiddle road; few call it the A537.

For those who don't know the road, its name comes from the Cat and Fiddle pub which is at the high part of the road. On the map, the road is called Buxton New Road, but nobody ever calls it that either !
