Rusty brake discs!!

Hi I am currently fixing up a bike which has sat in the garden for a few years and the brake discs have rusted up, is there a way of getting the rust off? Or will i have 2 buy new discs? Thanks

Get rid of the loose rust with a wire brush, the brake pads will do the rest when you use the bike.

Use a brush, a block or even wire wool to get the worst off.
Remember to do both sides.

If you have any doubts then check the thickness of the disk after you're finished (need some caliphers, measure about 3 or 4 points round the disk).
The minimum thickness should be printed on it, if not it'll be in the manual or 'phone the dealer.

If it's been stood that long I'd suggest a good service for the brakes, new pads and DOT 4 fluid. Give the pistons a good clean as well and check the seals. While you're at it check the lines, new stainless ones don't cost that much from the likes of busters (see stinkwheel's advice on replacing & prices - click here).

Ok thanks for the replies, i can't ride it as its a 600cc and im only 16 Embarassed

I'm cleaning it up for my dad as he hasn't got any spare time to do it!
