Can someone explain the learner motorcyclist rules?

It's a long time since I was a learner, and then you could ride a bike no bigger than 125 and (I think) 12 bhp. If you had a sidecar you could have a bike up to 250cc.

The test was in two parts, one was off-road and involved riding around cones, the other was on road, similar to the car test. You had to pass both parts to get a full licence, and had to pass within 2 years of getting your provisional licence, or else the provisional was revoked for a year.

What happens now? What's the cc limit? What is CBT? What's all this 33 bhp restrictor kit business?

Would somebody fill me in.

Hi,

You need a CBT to ride anything over 50cc up to 125cc or if you dont have a car licence you need you CBT to ride anything up to 125cc.

CBT is compulsory basic training and involves the riding around cones and then a supervised ride with instructor. After this you can ride up to a 125. This certificate expires after 2 years.

If you want to then ride some thing bigger you will have to do another test. This test is for you actual license so a theory test and practical test are needed. After passing you can throw away those `L` plates. If you are under 21 then after this test you are restricted to 33bhp. If you are over 21 you can do the DA which enables you to ride anything.

Hope this makes sense.

If not try google and look at the training sites

I'm from the old old school, When the provisional licence was no more than filling in a form and a postage stamp and limited to 250cc

I live in South Africa now and the wife is looking at getting a bike licence. You need to pass a written test on rules of the road etc, if your under 18 then your limited to 125cc, over 18 then you can learn on a Busa. When it comes to the test for the full licence, take it on <125cc and your limited to a 125, if the bike is >125cc then you ride anything.

For Everyone wanting to learn to ride a motorcycle

In order to validate your Provisional Motorcycle Licence, you have to do CBT.

This allows those 17 or over to ride a motorcycle with an engine size up to 125cc, producing up to 14.6bhp.

Those who are 16 may ride a motorcycle with an engine size up to 50cc, and limited to 31mph.

You may not carry pillion passengers, ride on motorways and must display 'L' plates. The CBT Certificate is valid for 2 years from the date of issue, after this time you must complete CBT again.

N.B - Those who have held their car driving licence for a long time will have a Moped entitlement on their licence. This allows you to ride a 50cc Motorcycle without 'L' plates.

You must then take a theory test. You must pass both parts of this test before you may book your practical exam.

For those aged under 21, or not interested in DAS

You must then take a practical exam on a 125cc motorcycle. You will probably need training in order to pass.

This will allow you to ride any motorcycle, with any engine size. It must not, however, produce more than 33bhp.

This is a full licence. The 33bhp restriction is taken off after two years.

For those over 21

You can undertake training with a qualified DAS instructor, on any size motorcycle, provided it produces more than 46.6bhp. You can then take the test on this bike.

This will allow you to ride any size motorcycle straight away.

Other types of Licence

Moped - You are able to ride a motorcycle up to 50cc, without 'L' plates and carry pillions. Motorway restrictions will prevent you from using motorways. This is the same as appears on some older driving licences.

A1 - Light motorcycle licence. This allows you to ride a motorcycle with an engine size up to 125cc, producing up to 14.6bhp with no restictions as to Motorway Usage or Pillions.

Hope this clears things up

Craig
