hi all,
right fist off im getting a four stroke 125 in the summer and a want to know which is best for the money i have and what i want to do or go.
i have about £800 maximum
i want to travel to college on it everyday to avoid traffic and its faster than the ped i currently have.
whats best for value, i know they're all pretty reliable, the fastest one would be good, maybe with a little style into the mixture.
all this for £800 or less. (wishes) |

i got a yamaha TW 125 good cause they're geared but the off road enduro style is a little aqquired i think. before i had a Gilera DNA 125, nice looks and not bad top sped i clocked about 72 on it, very sporty with a rev counter and digital speedo. The TW in my experience is more of a real bikers bike than the dna, the points i like about the TW are the gears, chain drive, sidestand and reserve petrol tank. The DNA looks much sportier and is faster but i didnt enjoy the ride as much as the TW. its much heavier for a start and is harder to bank round the corners, if your planning on moving onto a bigger bike it is poor practise as it has no clutch gears or foot operated rear brake. The TW at times can be embarrassingly slow but i just see this as an incentive to pass the 33bhp test. reliability wise i heard the gilera is less reliable but i had only a HT lead snap on me in 7 months on the TW i had an inlet valve snap within 2 weeks. i can see the TW being more expensive to maintain in the long run however because of the chain drive system, mne had just over 5000 miles on the clock and is almost at the end of its available extension, with the DNA the belt drive system doesnt consume at anywhere near this rate and still felt good at transferring power efficiently.
it depends if you want a 125 to keep or a 125 to take your test on and move up to a bigger bike. for keeping i would consider something like the TW or a honda CBR. to use to pass the bike test, something cheap like a CG125.

Either keep the ped, or go for a 125 without spending the full £800 (local rags usually turn up a bundle of 125s from around £350, sometimes you can find a deal/steal).
The less you spend on a bike that you're only going to have for say, a year or so? the more worthwhile it would be - you could learn how to use a geared bike ready for your test and then have a bit more money saved to put towards your first big bike, post test.

Bought this for £350 when I was 17, learnt to ride it, cleaned it up passed my test, and sold it for £650! |

I really enjoyed riding my CityFly on my CBT.
Nice styling (Enduroish), uses bullet proof CG engine, very nice clutch, easy to control, nice comfy riding position (Great for taller people, I'm 6' 2" and I felt small on it!), really good brakes, easy to UTurn, can get about 65 mph on it and you felt very balanced and well planted on the road on it, can't recommend it enough if you don't like the look/feel of the CG.

Might be able to pick one up for around the 800 mark, but they're quite rare... I've never heard of them as CBT bikes until I did mine on one, but I loved it!
Try ebay and biketrader, I'd say you'd have a better chance on ebay, could also try an ex CBT bike from a riding school |
