Depends on what you mean by an NSR 500.

If you mean the GP bike then no, there isnt a road legal one and there never will be as they are not sold to the public and are kept in honda musiems. ven if you did get one it would take an army of mechanics to keep going. power would be over 200hp though!

I am sure that some headcase has put a 500 2 stroke engine in an NSR 250 frame and painted it to look like the GP bike though! Thumbs Up

Put it this way mate, the closest you'll get to a road legal NSR500 is an NS400, RD500 or RG500. But be prepared to spend a lot of money on it and make sure you have about 20 quid spare a week for oil and an extra 20 for petrol.

Not poo, one of the best handling (if not the best handling bike) of the mid 1980s. Fairly reliable. Just sounds like 3 ducks farting.

All the best

The NS was great then and now, but you cannot get the parts to keep them on the road now, which is the biggest downside of these bikes. Like Keith said the NS was better handling than most sportsbikes before 1990, and it would out handle the RD, and RG500's with ease! It was just 20bhp/100cc down, but with the Terry Sheppard 500 kit and Jollymoto pipes they really fly!

Nearest I've seen is someone putting 2x250cc RG motors (somehow welded together or something) in an NC30 frame. Still work in progress though, I think.

The NS400 is still good for 130-135mph with cracking acceleration, enough to give some 600's a good run for their money. When they hit the powerband, its guaranteed to rip your arms from your shoulders!

Theres no problem with the NS400R other than the unavailability of new spares, no pistons, gasket sets, or crank assemblys can be purchased from Honda dealers today, as Honda has long ago stopped making the spares. They wernt as slow as people think either, they had 59bhp at the wheel and did 128mph std, and a 12.5 sec 1/4mile. Thats faster than a Yamaha 350YPVS which itself is pretty nippy! The Bigger 4cyl Yam/Suzuki's were doing 145mph, and mid 11's in the 1/4mile.

The problem with the NS is that it could have easily gone much quicker, as Honda got the exhaust system design badly wrong, and a set of decent pipes could add nearly 10bhp, and 10-15mph to the top speed!

According to that the bimota weighs in at 160kilo dry.... thats bloody huge for a 2stroke, i would be expecting closer to 140!

https://www.400greybike.co.uk/Forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=31301

Thats the closest ive seen to a nsr500 replica, using a vfr400 frame and rgv500 engine....

Hi

Not sure on the V Due weight (the tricks for the quoted dry weights are quite extensive), but this site quotes them at 145kg. Aprilia claimed a dry weight of 141kg for the RS250. Size wise it is 30mm shorter than an Aprilia RS250.

All the best

Keith

yeah i dont think there's many strokers that sound as good as the RD500. It sounds very different to either the NS or the RG, and is much smoother, and sounds zingy and revvy, maybe like 4 TZR125's with good race pipes fitted.
The RG sounds so horrible and soggy at low revs, possibly partly due to its disc valve induction system, and the only time it sounds very good, is just at the transition point where it comes onto the powerband.
I'd like to hear a Kawasaki H2 750, with decent pipes and open filters fitted, hopefully i will one day!

Still when ive got my KMX back together, with a thin walled performance expansion chamber, and a DEP silencer, i think that will sound pretty good too!
The only way i can get any smell and sound of 2stroke at the moment, is to keep starting up my Petrol flymo, which is kinda sad i suppose!
