Hi people
I am new to biking and have a Kawasaki GPZ5200S, '99 D-model with 8,700 miles. I changed the oil and filter 950 miles ago (last October) using Halfords fully synthetic motorcycle oil of 5W-40 viscosity. Firstly, is this the correct oil to use? After only 450 miles I had to top the oil up as it was at the minimum mark!! Initially, I expected not to have to put too much in but well over a litre went in (maybe nearer 1.5L). After another 400 miles same issue.
The bike does not smoke at startup, idling or under acceleration. I have checked for leaks from the sump plug and oil filter but there are none. Leaving the bike standing does not leave any trace of an oil leak.
I ride the bike sensibly, it redlines at 11000rpm and I have not taken it beyond 9000rpm.
Please can someone advise if this is normal to top up the oil as I have an 8 year old car and do not have to top the oil up between changes (approx 4000 miles).
Thanks in advance.

Hi

I don't have that much experience as I'm new to biking - on my second 'big' bike, but my R6 1999 uses a litre of oil every 500 miles if its thrashed and it doesn't smoke at all. I'm not actually sure how long the oil would last if I didn't thrash it, as I couldn't do more than a few miles without giving it a few revs. Very Happy

I'm not sure either if its normal, but I've never worried about it, just keep it topped up.

Ta

Barry

first of all you should be using 10W40 semi sysfectic oil, and changing the oil and filter every 3,000 miles.

the oil useage sounds a little high for a low mileage bike, have you checked the clucth cover for any leaks as this can happen on some kawasaki,s.

remeber to cheak the oil level when the bike is on its centre stand and when the engine is cold.
