PostPosted: 10:21 - 27 Jun 2005    Post subject: Weird clutch(?) problem, help! Reply with quote

My bike (kawasaki KLR600) has got a weird problem. When I start the bike it runs fine and as normal in neutral and also when I pull the clutch in, it also runs fine up to bite point on the clutch but as soon as I'm moving and I've let the clutch fully out it stalls.

I checked some stupid stuff like lever adjustment and stuff like that but I know nothing about engine innards so I don't really know what to check. Also, it was running fine yesterday with no wierd noises or anything like that.

I don't have a clue what's wrong with it and I'm quite bricking it because knowing my luck I'm going to need a new gearbox or soemthing.

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks

Rob

Side stand switch? They can get sticky. If it stays in it will think the stands down and stop you riding away. Thus it kills the engine when you release the clutch in gear.

Nah, the sidestand switch on my bike was dodgy when I got it so me and my dad bridged it, should have said, sorry. Thanks for your reply Thumbs Up.

It's not come undone when you bridged it or nothing like that? Just sounds very sidestandish to me!

Wouldn't have thought it was it was the sidestand, thought most sidestand switches cut the bike as soon as you selected a gear not after when you released the clutch?, Hondas and Suzuki do it that way.
Take it you can't rev through it, slipping the clutch doing a hard start?. If not do you have to pull the clutch in to start it like some bikes?, if so check that switch isn't sticking.

Nope, it stalls as soon as the clutch is fully released. It starts normally on the kickstart or electric starter with it neutral or with it in gear with the clutch pulled in, it's just that as soon as you let the clutch out fully it stalls Sad.

Zxr400er - I'll check out the sidestand switch although I'm pretty sure that it's not the problem in this case as before we bridged it cut out when you selected gear as Bezzer pointed out. Still, maybe something went weird in there, I'll check it out.

Thanks for the replies guys Thumbs Up.

On my bike you can put it in gear with the stand down as long as you hold the clutch in, as soon as you let go of clutch it cuts out.

There might well be a safety cutout switch in the clutch, there often is, to make sure you start it with the clutch pulled in. If that's borked it could cause those problems. Bridge it cut it out altogether depending on whether it's normally open or closed.

There is a switch which tells the engine when the clutch has been let out... On my bike its underneath the clutch lever itself.

Maybe you could try bypassing that switch and see if it stops.
