Been looking into buying a bandit 600 as some of you allready know...

Went to a place called transit motorcycles In york today and inquired as to what they had in.

They had a faired 600 bandit for £2750 which looked nice so I inquired about a part ex on my ER-5 (shameless plug here Its for sale please click the link in my sig) They said £800 which I laughed at him knowing fine well its worth more than double that to them.

Then my mate came and said "what you upto?" I replied "This gentlemen is just amusing me with a price for part exchange on the ER"

What a fool, I simply walked out and left him with his overpriced bikes.

I then went to york suzuki who were much friendlier and would offer me £1350 part ex but they didnt really have what I was looking for in stock.

Why are some dealers out to properly rip you off?

I know people have to make a living/profit as it is a business not a charity but ripping people off! do they expect to sell bikes like that?

The £1400 I want for my 2001 ER-5 is a good price (another shamelss plug)

*The dodsi corporation do apologise for the plugs used in this post*

I think they work on the same wavelength as insurance companies.

If they don't want your business they'll quote you a silly price. Where if you don't take it, they don't have the hastle, and if you do, they've got enough money to make it worth their while.

Maybe they just don't want an ER-5.

Guess they just have to make their money somewhere...If I owned a dealer, I'd probably offer more than £800 p'ex, but not as much as £1350.

Just get advertising everywhere, you.

Oh come on siggi....you run a business, you going to say you'd pour money down the drain? Me thinks not...

As unfair and greedy as it is, thats how a business works! Shocked Shocking, eh! Must have had a lot of suckers through the door to only offer £800 though. Either that or tom looks like he doesn't know any better! Laughing Wink

I completly agree with needing to make a profit as they are a business.

But ripping people off?

The bandit was way overpriced anyways at £2750 for a faired one with 12K miles in average condition.

So making a killing both ends.

And one of the owners had an XJ220 at one time, which he wrote off apparently.

All the best

Boxter is owned by the garage next door to the best of my knowledge. Transit are top blokes and I have been using them for years, they don't give much for PX when they dont need really need bikes. They will only take in PX bikes or buy them when they have space for them. That said yours is a nice bike and is in very good nick. I don't think 800 is too bad as you paid 1000 for it. To expect a huge PX is unrealistic as they have to make some money on selling it as they are a business! Having said that I have never paid full price for a bike from there and have always got as much free stuff as I can blag. Cash is by far the best way to bring prices down.

Who did you speak to there? What time were you in as I was in Transits today.

l don’t like most dealership staff, they either know very little about bikes or talk complete crap and don’t understand why l will not buy a bike off them without test riding it first.

one dealerships parts counter near me re-fused to sell me a chain split link section (which they had in stock) because they considered them dangerous Rolling Eyes and would only sell one if l booked/paid in advance for the bike to have the chain riveted.

I walked out of fowlers due to their poor service.

I had just passed my CBT back in the day, and had 1500 quid burning a hole in my bck pocket.

At the time, there was a deal on on brand new CG125's at 1499, which i thought was a steal-disc brake model too!

Walked in pointed at the one i wanted (a blue one) and said to the salesman "i am buying that CG, get the paperwork." He looked disinterested, mumbled and walked towards a desk. Some guy collared him about a look at some big bike. They began to talk and you could see him getting all sales pitchy, after 20 minutes of me standing there i got fed up and asked him when he was going to sort the CG for me. He looked blank. I told him he had just lost a sale as i had the money to buy it immediately and wasnt going to give them the money.

one hour later, i walked into local shop to look at the hyonsung cruise cruise 2's he had in stock. The wire wheeled models were 1650 i think so a bit out of my price range, but the only basic one they had was a horrid green. The manager said "go on have the blue one for 1450 seeing as your paying up front". Within 2 hours i was on the road.

York Suzuki have a faired 99 bandit for 2400 squid in on there site which isn't much cheaper than transits, although I think the one in transits is a bit newer. If they are offering you 1350 px they will be selling it on for a fair bit more than that. There will be some other person on a forum somewhere grumbling about the price of an ER5.

But how does what I paid for the bike affect its second hand value?

On that basis I should walk into a dealership and demand that I get the bike for less than what they paid?

I told the guy what I paid for my ER-5 in york suzuki and he said that it doesnt change what they would offer me for it in part ex.

The bandits they had at york suzuki and transit were a very similer price/age/condition which was expensive.

But again, I am unimpressed with dealerships in general, I much prefer to buy private.

I was in transit mid afternoon time...

Siggi,

Thats exactly what I am going to do, Dealers charge way too much for bikes and offer little/no warrenty really with them.

you paid less than the bike was worth when you bought it. the dealer wants to pay less than the bike was worth.

its the same thing. You got a bargain and he wants a bargain.

If either of u dont agree on price you just go elsewhere. If you cant find someone who will pay what you want then maybe it wasnt such a bad price.

You have a bike which isn't going to be that easy to sell, mainly because everyone wants shiny sports bikes or shiny cruisers, not a shiny commuter/learners bike.

He is a dealer and running a business, yes he has to rip people off sometimes, that is his job, surely it isn't hard for you to work out that its a lot easier for him to sell say a CBR600 and if you paid 1k for it then £800 is a bloody good offer for a part ex.

As Shaun said, commuters just don't sell that well. When I sold the GPZ, the dealer actually had 3 others instock, so I wasn't expecting the £850 he gave me for it. Dealers really have to think how quickly they'll be able to get the money back on a bike, and if its a bike they're likely to have in for a long while they'll offer you bottom book price.

Also the fact you bought yours on ebay shows this too, I wonder how long the dealer had yours instock before they decided to shove it on ebay?

Hi

Say £2k for the showroom, add another £500 for gas, electric, rates, etc. He needs to make £3500 profit a month just to pay himself minimun wage.

Sells 5 bikes and that is £700 a bike profit he needs to make per bike (and that is assuming it is 100% profit, so realistically double that allowing for fixes).

All the best

Keith

Remember, at the end of the day, the salesman has to make a profit on your bike if he gets it. He won't offer very much for it because the size of the profit will decrease. Although 800 was a silly price for that nice ER of yours. Smile

Told it quite a few years back. Breakers in Cheddleton (where D&K used to be based) had a photo on the wall when I was buying something. Was told the story. Guy working there was ex D&K.

People seem to be missing the point here.

I went to a differant place which had similer bikes at similer prices and they offered me £1350 for the bike.

Thats £550 more.

What I paid for the bike does not affect its value one single penny.

I didnt tell the guy at transits how much I paid for the bike. £800 is a joke.

But alas, I would rather sell my bike private and buy private.

if thats fowlerss of bristol, then that sounds about right. jump on a hornet or better, they are all over you, look at the rs125's or cg125 etc... they wont bother you other than to ask you to leave at 5pm.
