I have just ridden back from Hyde, Manchester to Alfreton, Derbyshire.
Having been out on 749 all day, back and wrist ache, I am not sure I took the right decision to ride the snake pass between Glossop and Sheffield in the dark!!!!

I did this last week. Set of at 9ish in the light, enjoying the lovely scenery, but it was getting quite dark by the time I got across.
I enjoyed it, but what spoilt it for me was the fact that despite the scenery (I did not need to go fast to enjoy myself), I had to keep one eye on the speedo, because of all the specs cameras on the Sheffield side!!!, and as for the Manchester side, they have painted the cameras green, cheeky monkeys!! Evil or Very Mad

It is yellow and red currently, picture is on these boards.

I did not leave Hyde until gone pub closing time.

Trouble was that my back and wrists were aching bad, as i had already done about 250 miles earlier that day.. and was not at my fittest by the time i entered the pass

Those green things on the way into Glossop from the motorway are speed cameras of sorts but not proper ones that they can do you with, the worst they can do is send you a warning letter through the post - read this for the details. Of course there are a few proper gatsos and truvelos in the area as well.
The SPECS cameras are on the Stocksbridge bypass - so if you come over Snake Pass you're nowhere near there! You're thinking of Woodhead...

Are you sure you're not getting confused with the traffic master cameras?

These are nothing to do with speed cameras and record vehicles speeds in order to estimate journey distance times for in car navigation devices. They're mostly blue but you see some green ones as well. https://www.abd.org.uk/blue-cam.htm I used to think these were speed cameras when I first got my bike.

Snake pass rocks(only done it the once though and then went and binned my bike the same day Doh! )

They're not traffic master cameras, they're second grade speed cameras that they can use to send you a warning. They also operate those electronic "SLOW DOWN" signs.

It's rubbish round snake at the weekend, excpessialy this time of year and when the suns out. It's far to busy with walkers, tourists visiting the peak district ect ect. Also watch out for the sports car drivers, they tend to go in to hard and end up the wrong side of the road on corners.

Late evening or early mid week is the time to go. Watch out though late eveining on the glossop side as you enter the nsl. Seen a few coppers before at the pub just before the nsl signs doing people for speeding before they enter it. Think they where in an unmarked silver car last year, only noticed them because of the high vis jackets and a couple of cars flashing me before hand (even though I was within the speed limit).

On the plus side, it's a very scenic route, and if you head over to castleton there are a few nice unclassified roads in the area.
