So my clutch cable snapped for the second time in two weeks yesterday! (I did replace the first one that went, just incase you were wondering!)

The place where I got my last cable from wasn't a kawasaki dealership (don't think there are any around me, anyone know of any in North Wales?). I took my first broken cable to the shop to see if they could get one in but they managed to find one the right length in a box of cables and other assorted bike parts. I assume that it was a faulty cable as it snapped after 2 weeks of being on my bike and I know that I put it on correctly. I was wondering where I stand on this, should I just be able to get a refund? (they said they wouldn't be able to order one in from kawasaki for some reason so I doubt they'd be able to exchange it) as I don't want any store credit or anything because TBH I've had enough of this particular shop as they have messed me around before. I also don't have the receipt anymore so I don't know if that makes a difference.

Anyone know where I can get new cable for my bike (1989 Kawasaki KLR600 (KL600 - B4)) ASAP as I need it for work and college so I can't really be waiting on an order for weeks. They seem to be as rare as rocking horse shit.

Cheers

Rob

I'd be more worried on why it keeps snapping, is it getting caught on something inside or getting snagged by something?

I've checked for burrs and sharp edges in the lever but there aren't any.

The first cable snapped just from general wear and tear as it was on the bike before I had it but the second one was an obvious faulty cable IMO as the ball end at the lever spereated from the cable.

I'd just put it down as one of those things.

Try eBay. Either that, or get one ordered, I had to order some dust seals for my TZR 250, and they arrived within 3 days.

All the best

Meantime if you are stuck and there is a Hein Gericke near you. Go in and buy a "Nippelpannenset".

It is a small tin that contains several lengths of cable with pear nipples on one end and a selection of solderless nipples that you can use to make a temporary cable repair in an emergency. A handy thing to have anyway. Fits under your saddle.

If you are any good at soldering, you could always try repairing the one you have.

Ok, thanks guys.

I'll have a look for a "Nippelpannenset" because I'm crap at soldering, I've already destroyed a guitar with a dodgy re-wire!

I wouldn't trust a solder repair on a clutch cable. You can pull solder apart, I just feel that the strength would be a fair bit down on standard.

Luckily I've not had any cables fail yet, I'm not looking forward to it.

What did you think the nipple is held on with in the first-place Gaz??

The solder itself doesn't hold the nipple on as such. The end of the cable is teased out inside the nipple to a wider diameter than the hole then covered in solder so it can't pull back through. That is how they are made. I do most of my own cables, other than unevenly split ones which are tricky to get right.
