Hi folks,

For some time now I have been trying to find some additional bike training, like one of those Police Bikesafe things or whatever, but I cant find one! The police website's Ive found havent shown anything.

Two factors:

1) Needs to be free! (Sorry, im skint!)

2) Needs to be in the north east (ish)

Anbody know where I should turn exactly?

A mate told me of a police bikesafe thing a while ago but when we turned up there was nobody there.

Confused Hope someone can help.

Ring ROSPA and ask if there is a local motorcycle group in your area. If so they usually offer free training up to test standard, and may if successful, encourage and ask if you want to train further to become a ROSPA observer, so that you can then take other people out on training rides, as they are usually short of trainers, depending on the area. ROSPA training is normally free, but as the trainers give up their own free time and pay for their own petrol, it is a good gesture to offer the trainer petrol money for their trouble.
I used to be in a local ROSPA group, but the trainer i had moved away, and i let things slip.
Im hoping to join the Local IAM group in my area, who also do advanced training, and usually have a sunday ride out, as a group, but they will do observed ride outs as well, to help you train for taking the test. Overall i think the IAM and ROSPA are a friendly bunch, who would be happy to offer anyone help or guidance with advanced tuition and arranging to take the test.
If you do have a local bikesafe event in your area, its well worth going along, as these groups will be there as well as Police motorcycle instructors, and they will be able to give you any information about advanced training in your area that you need.

yep

what he said

Rospa or IAM will cost you a bit but not much

£15 a year membership
£50 or £60 for the test
£5 a session for petrol with your trainer

and that should be about it

and then you get a saving on your insurance which more than makes up for it over the years

things to remember

More insurance companies seem to recognise IAM than Rospa although Rospa is generally regarded as a higher standard (if you get Gold)

IAM is for life, Rospa has to be renewed every 3 years

Okay thats useful, I might try and contact IAM and ROSPA and decide which based on that. I reckon I'd enjoy doing it.

Im not sure what they would think of a young male on a sportsbike turning up mind, but Im sure theyre a tolerant bunch Laughing

Does anybody happen to know anything about bikesafe in the northeast though? The website doesnt specify any events, and I havent heard of any "through the grapevine" thusfar.

I did all my training and test on a zx12r with a full race exhaust system and small plate on it

no one minds, that's not what they are about
