Well not the happiest of first posts.
Today some blind fool ran straight into the back of me while I was waiting at a junction, the bike is in a bit of a state (50/50 chance of being a write off) but amazingly I got away with just a bruised leg after it was trapped under the bike.
The point of this post is wearing the right gear ie. leathers & boots as I honestly think they saved me some serious injuries. So even if it is 90 degrees don't risk your limbs for the sake of being a bit uncomfortable when you're sat in the cafe.

Ride safe and look out for those cars 'cos they're out to get ya! Wink

Probably shouldn't get involved in this debate again, but what the hell, I am bored.

Ever ridden a bike in full leathers (which are usually black) with a lid on at 90 degrees?

You would quickly start to suffer from heat exhaustion. Start suffering from heat exhaustion and your concentration and reaction times are seriously reduced. If it went too far you could even pass-out.

Glad to hear you are ok though. At least it is a pretty clear-cut claim of the other guys insurance so your no-claims shouldn't be screwed over.

Thumbs Up

The can was for a Bandit but it ain't much use to anyone now (didn't you see the pic?)
I didn't see what he was doing when he hit me but I don't think it was any of those options because:-
1. he didn't smoke
2. he lives local
3. I couldn't see any smudged lipstick Laughing
4. If there was a swedish whore I must have missed her (damn!!)

It was a perfect day, dry and bright (hazy sunshine) I just can't work out how he didn't see me Confused

Yes stinkwheel I have and do ride in full leathers whatever the weather and can't understand how people can get too hot while riding unless you're stuck in slow moving traffic and unable to filter, but maybe that's just me I don't know. When someone says "aren't you hot in those leathers" my reply is "I have the air conditioning control in my right hand so no"

Maybe in this country. But how often does the temperature hit a constant 90 degrees in the UK?

I rode a Harley over in the states this summer. It was 90 degrees and 70-80% humidity, you had to be carefull parking on tar roads because the stand would sink-in. I wore my leather jacket the first couple of times out but it was unbearably hot. Landed up in shorts and a shirt with a camel-back on. I was in a muck sweat all the way. Had to buy a bandanna to keep the sun off my head and the sweat out of my eyes.

Stinkwheel - don't forget you were riding a Hardly Able Son and everyone knows they are so slow that flies have time to overtake you.

Just a joke, before all the "I've got a Harley and it's great" people get on my case!

I ride in leathers in London and when the weather is really hot and you are trapped in the traffic it is damned uncomfortable. However I wore jeans and a jacket the other day and whilst it was cooler when I was moving it was even hotter when I was stuck in traffic - a 1,000cc V-Twin pumps out a lot of heat.

Most of us pasty Brits aren't really prepared for the temperatures when riding abroad. I dreaded every town and village in the South of France because I know I would have to drop the speed and the temp would rise....and on top of that the fan would kick in and blow even more hot air at me. I'm told I started behaving a bit irrationally at one point and that could only have been due to the temps. 35 degrees in the shade and a shit load more on the road.
Apparently you can get special underware that keeps you cool so I'll be investing in some of that next trip. But I'll still shed the leathers if it's still too hot.

Even in pretty hot conditions the most a normal person will suffer with full leathers on is discomfort.

Persnally I think staying protected with full kit even in hot conitions is the way forward.

Everyone makes their choice - the person who slides down the road without their leathers on will be severely wishing they had worn their leathers and wondering if severly injuring themselves was worth it.

The person who slides down the road with their kit on will have a saw arse and will be annoyed at having to buy some more leathers.

I know my choice. Smile

Glad to hear your alright m8 Thumbs Up not so good for the bike but hey...

As I've had an accident recently I can say that wearing all the gear has properly SAVED me from having a broken ankle, burns and cuts on the upper body... The only thing is I was wearing jeans and thats why my leg got so badly f**ked up but spending all the cash on the Alpinestars gear was definately worth it...

I can honestly say that I agree on both parts, its very arduous wearing full leathers or even the jacket in HOT conditions and can lack concentration when "suffering from exhaustion" so obviously the tables turn and you decide to ride without protection sometimes. We've all probably done it right? Just ride safe and it's peoples decision whether or not they wear the right gear, just as long as you know what the consequences may occur too. I'll try and ride with all the gear as I know it helped me not having any major injuries... Think safe!

I've been very nearly by a woman in a car taking her primary school kid to school. Maybe she didn't see me, but there was a bloody big white van infront of me stopped and does she really care that little about her kid?

Generally, if I'm riding in a manner that could justify me not wearing leathers, I might as well be in the car anyway Smile.

Ok, errr, I do actually go out with just assault boots, a bike jacket gloves and helmet a lot of the time (work etc) while I still ride a little 'spirited'. Have ridden with less than that in the past, but these days I'd just take the car.
I don't ride a bike just for the sake of being seen on a bike Wink Razz.

Now you learn something every day (the SMIDSY bit) I thought that was original Shocked

Just an up date, even though I had the leathers and boots on I still had to spend 3 hours in A & E today just for them to tell me I had a neck sprain (whiplash) which I already knew but you have to go through the procedure for insurance purposes.

when people say they get too hot in full leathers, they do not realise that leathers are not all the same.

i have a modern, black 2 piece leathers which is the right size for me that i cook in even with just the jacket of it with jeans.

I have an old one piece (£35 off ebay) which is too big for me with lots air perforations with about 20 holes per square inch of leather and im fine in that cos the air just blows though keeping me cool.

I know its not gonna protect me aswell as leather the right size but it keeps me cool.

Two vents on the shoulders just done cut it

I have the constitution of a lizard, so when i'm on the move in leathers i feel cold, despite the outside temperature.
It has to be about 35 degrees before i feel hot when moving, and i hate riding in winter, no matter how many layers i wear i still shiver.

Leathers being too hot was never a good excuse for not wearing proper kit instead of jeans though. There are some great pieces of textile kit which is getting on for as good protection as leather, but which breathes just fine, and can be silver/ white/ whatever to help reflect the heat.

The right gear in those kinds of temperatures isn't leathers, it's summer textiles.

I completly agree.

I have some Frank Thomas textile gear which i use most of the year, nice thick warm lining for the winter (and waterproof too!) and without the lining nice and cool for the summer.

No thanks, I wouldn't want to slide down the road in anything but leather. I've riddne through France, Spain, Italy, Switzerland and various other countries in anything up to 34 degreesC and I have never had a worry about heat exhaustion. Sweat patches, yes Very Happy

Oh and SMIDSY the robot is an entry from my bike club, Ixion. It's a UK mailing list. We were hoping he'd do better but the CO2 powered flipper lot were just too good.

Cheers

Hi

It happens. People come up behind you at a junction, looking at the traffic and see a gap and assume you are going for it.

And this is typical French motorcycle police riding gear.

stinkwheel- I've ridden in florida as well, and I know what you're on about. But down there its not just the 90 degree temperate, its the 95% humidity. I only used to wear my leather jacket on long runs there because around town it would just be unbearable.

Seen as how there aren't even any helmet laws in Florida and most rider's idea of headware is shades and a bandana, they look at you like you're weird if you wear proper gear. Mind you, the risk of falling off is severely reduced by the complete and total lack of any corners whatsoever.
