I followed a scooter this morniing (fully Modded up, mirrors, parka etc). And the guy was constantly looking in one of his 8 mirrors...seriously over checking! I kept a distance behind him due to his wobbliness, he didnt look road safe at all. But the biggest surprise was he kept doing life savers on a straight bit of road. I was a little worried for him, especially when he turned round looking at me just as a car drove across the road in front of him......he nearly didnt see it....it was sooo close to being an accident....

If he had stopped anywhere I could have spoken to him I would have....but he didnt - he kept on going wobblying up the road. An accident waiting to happen!

hahaha
I have seen this aswell following a scooter, the guy could not keep a straight line and was looking in the mirrors way too much.
Must of been the sound of my bike that unsettled him!!

Not just scooters however. I have seen plenty of people on bikes who cannot ride them.

At least he wasn't going round corners with his foot down (speedway style) like the last scooter I followed was!

got me thinking how damn dangerous a cbt is, about 3-6 hours of riding then your on the road, with cars doing 30+ and you on a bike, it doesnt teach one enough at all about safety or hazard perception

Its amazing how you forget to look in the direction of travel when your worried about whats going on behind you.

Mirror checking and every 5 second lifesavers is a defnintie sign of no confidence, you only need to do ife savers when actually manuevering otherwise you are only taking away vital concentration in the most importtant aspect-the direction of travel.

Best way to learn this is to ride your bike without your mirrors-discourages idle checking and forces you to check properly when manueuvering.

AND, the CBT only became law in January 1997!!! You think about how wobbly us oldies were...my first lesson on a road bike was by my mother in our back garden. On my first attempt I wound back the throttle and hurtled across the roses and into our shed. 10 minutes later I was out on the roads! Okay I lived in the countryside and only had to worry about the odd tractor on tiny B roads...but I do think the CBT is a grand idea!

I was following a scooter home through the lanes last night (I was in the car) and he had three back-end slides on a newly gravelled road. Didn't slow him down though, I do have the feeling that, for him, it's only a matter of time.

Cheers

Today on my way into London I saw quite few people that obviously where rusty or new to bike/scooters and more than a few people like me with pillion passengers they where unused to commuting with.

But we have to show life goes on and we will not let the bastard win.

I honestly expect to see more bikes about London now then ever before I just hope people pick up the needed skills, confidence and experience quickly and safely.
