Interested in an aprilia rs250. Need some advice. Does it need the dreaded engine rebuild like the rs125? Is the oil expensive and is there alot of maintenence involved?

Is it worth getting this stunning 2 stroke, or would i be better off with something like a 400cc (also very nice)?

Cheers

Depends what you want it for.

It does need minor engine rebuilds every 10k miles or so just new rings, with more major ones less often. These could cost less than doing the valves on a 4 cylinder 4 stroke bike.

There isn't really that much maintenance needed, but good oil is needed (probably about £10 a liter) and it drinks petrol as well as oil, so not a cheap bike to run.

It is a very focused bike, I have got one as a second (or third) bike for 'fun' road use. Some don't mind an extreme position and tight power bands for commuting; personally I don't.

Ok, thanks for that. If I get this RS250 it will be restricted to 33bhp, how fast will it go if its top speed is about 130mph without the kit on?

I've not heard of an Rs250 that has been restricted to 33bhp and personally, I cant see it enjoying that at all. Two-strokes such as the RS perform best in the power band (obviously) and with a 33bhp restriction kit, the power will most likely cut out before it reaches this part in the rev range. This is the same with pretty much all restrictions. My bandit would only rev to 7000rpm when 33bhp, thats only half way through the revs. It had no go at all.

I'm guessing that the RS250 is restricted through the exhaust port? (Power valves replaced by blanking plates to limit the size of the port?)

Chances are, the bike will slowly get to the ton and not go much quicker than that. Probably will have a similar 0-60 and top speed as a full power RS125.

RS250 is restricted by carb washers. I've got a rs250 restriction kit (came with my first rs250); though never used it as I have got a full licence.

F.I International actually said the rs250 is the worst bike to restrict full stop. Just ruins the ride it apparently. No real power. Sad
