TRL Need volunteers for Road Surface Survey
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Just received a request from the Transport Research Laboratory. I can't help as TRD is only really a London area mag but I thought there must be some people here who'd be interested in helping. Anyway, here's the text of the request.
What are your views on road surface condition?
Surveys carried out across the UK have shown that the quality of the road surface is one of the motorcycle rider's main concerns. TRL (Transport Research Laboratory) and MORI Ltd have been commissioned by the Highways Agency to conduct research on road user perception of road condition. As part of this research TRL are conducting a survey into motorcyclists' views on the condition of the road surface of trunk roads.
TRL needs to recruit regular motorcyclists in Bedford, Rugby, Cambridge, Darlington Manchester and Crewe who are willing to be interviewed in their homes. The one-to one interviews will take about 20 minutes. The interviews in Bedford, Rugby, Cambridge and Darlington will take place between 19 February 2005 and 26 March 2005 and the interviews in Manchester and Crewe between 5 April 2005 and 13 May 2005. Volunteers will be contacted by phone to fix a mutually convenient date and time for the interviews. They will be asked questions regarding the type of motorcycle they ride, and how often they ride on the trunk roads. They will then be asked to give their opinion on the condition of these roads in terms of factors such as road surface, lighting, road signs, road markings, edge of carriageway and line of vision. Volunteers will also be able to suggest other aspects of condition that cause concern.
In addition, TRL is looking for further volunteers from each town to ride the state of art TRL DataBike. TRL DataBike is a motorcycle fitted with cameras and a video recorder and equipment to monitor speed, use of brakes and indicators. It also has a geographical positioning system allowing the precise location of the motorcycle to be identified. The rider will be asked to ride a specific route and comment upon the road condition along that route. This information will then be analysed to determine the motorcyclist's views and experiences of the road surface.
Further details about this project are available from Alan Tilly at TRL. If you live in Bedford, Rugby, Cambridge, Darlington Manchester or Crewe and would like to be interviewed and/or ride the TRL DataBike please forward your contact details to Sandra Woodjetts.
