I imagine most people here look after their bikes and keep them in good condition. I have tried to, but a combination of having little time, giving it a bit of a thrashing and it having been stood for a year when I bought it mean that it wasn't the healthiest.
This weekend I set out, Haynes Manual in hand and gave the CG some TLC, and it certainly appreciated it! It accelerates better, has better engine braking, sounds nicer, runs better at low revs and shines more. Here's what I did.
- Tightened the chain. Since it's enclosed I hadn't noticed how slack it was. The previous owner had hardly used it so it's the first time its been put under much strain. The free play was over three times the recommended tolerance . I reckon this alone has improved every aspect of the ride, it is much more controlled and responsive at every speed.
- Cleaned the air filter. Funny, this one, it seems to be completely encased in solid metal.
- Changed the oil. Changed it about 1600 miles ago when I first got it, it had transformed from the lovely red to a horrible black, as can be expected.
- Adjusted the pilot jet, idle speed and throttle free play at the carb.
- Checked everything its easy to get at. Replaced 2 bulbs, thus rendering the bike road legal.
- Cleaned it, natch.
As I say, most of you will probably treat your bikes to regular care and attention but if you don't, why the hell not?! It'll love you for it. ____________________ Living life in the second overtaking lane!
