cleaning frames?

What can i use to clean or polish my frame other than autosol metal polish.

What is with the polishing of bikes all of a sudden. Now cleaning I can just about understand, I will grudgingly admit that keeping certain parts of your bike free of muck will add to its functionality, ease of servicing and longevity (depending on the sort of muck)... but polishing!!!

Polishing frames is for people with:

a) Too much time on their hands.
and
b) Nothing they need the use of their fingers for.

I believe a sponge or cloth and some soapy water is popular with many people.

I spray Scotoil FS365 all over mine periodically and leave it at that.

EDIT: I also sometimes give it a once over with a pressure washer if it has got really muddy or salt encrusted but don't tell the ratbike people or I'll get drummed out.

And no, I have never experienced any problems arising from pressure washing my bikes other than a temporary loss of function of drum brakes (which also happens if you go through a big puddle).

Aluminium frames don't actually need cleaning, let alone polishing. Chrome will allow rust, steel will rot and corrode and paint will crack and split, but aluminium will just sit there, no matter how much crap you throw at it. The finish will also go off aluminium in rapid quick time, as the layer of oxide gets formed. If you want to polish mild steel, you need your head examined. Wink

I clean and polish chrome so that it doesn't allow rust. The paint mostly keeps the rest from falling to bits. Job done. The rest of it I can forget, except for stopping rust from growing on the underside of the mudguards.

Of course, covering it in purple anodised tat is equally pointless. Very Happy

oh im never useing pressure washer again it broke my alarm it has no sound now Embarassed

It was a crap alarm then. If it can't cope with large amounts of water blasting at it at high speeds, it has no place on a motorcycle which is being ridden in the UK in my oppinion.
