Has anyone ridden one? own one? they seem to go pretty cheap and they have the same inline 4 engine as the CBR400... does anyone know if the performance is comparable? how about the handling?
I saw one on ebay and I had an idea about making one into a retro cafe racer  , all it would take is a pair of cheap drop-down clip ons and a few (just a few) tasteful chrome bits....
I'm on a GS500 at the moment, will a 400 inline 4 be faster than a twin 500?

Yep, 2 of my mates have got one. Very good roadster bike, quick up to about 80 and so much fun down a twisty back road - can embarass much larger machinery in the right hands. Performance compared to the CBR - better low down power, slightly better midrange, but runs out of puff a bit post 10k - where the CBR makes its better top end. On the road, short shifting and hooning about, the CBR doesn't show its advantage until the road straightens out and is able to use its legs. Handling is fantastic - so light and fickable, but not so 'planted' as say an NC30. Faster steering though, mostly down to the upright bars, so sub 50mph, the CB1's got a handling edge.
Have a look over at www.400greybike.co.uk and see soom other owners opinions. The 400 is comparible with the 500 twin, but is ultimately smoother, more fun and has a chasis that allows you to make the most of it. Plus it's got the added kudos of being an inline 4, and with a race exhaust, sounds fantastic.
Think of it as a scaled down, more fun, better valued (better built?) Honda Hornet, that's cheaper to run, easier to ride, and better to insure. |

Good little bike- i despatched on one for two months around London, was an absolute hoot! Whilst the bike is small, i still managed to carry pillion (and did a lap a large roundabout at thurrock lakeside with the hero blob scratching all the way 2 up).
Engine is sweet, easy to look after (gear driven cams) and is good for about 115mph.
Handlind is predicatable and boy does it lean. brakes are a bit lacking though, braided hoses should help.
a great handling bike which goes and stops well and bulletproof.

I agree with all of the above, there great, fun and nippy.
but..
After having one for about a year now I'm a bit tired of the constant gear changing and high pitched drone.
It is a good bike and I'm just showing the other side to it.
