On another forum I'm in someone posted informing that north yorks county council were seen salting the roads in 35 degree sunshine. Further investigation and it turns out According to the BBC website it's ground rockdust to creat a non-stick layer to stop the tarmac sticking to tyres -

NON STICK FFS!
