A mate of mine (ahem) is considering getting a second bike, registering it in his birds name and riding it on the '3rd party only on other bikes with owners permission' part of his insurance.
Any ideas on the legality of this?

Most policies, though not all, specify that the bike should be insured by the other rider.

It will have to be insured to get tax.

Legally, a v5 should be in the name of the main user.

This includes if someone has stolen it - they then can reasonably claim the v5 - though hopefully that should result in a call from the police.

When he gets off the bike it wont be insured. So he cant stop anywhere. Might only count anyway if the bike is already insured.

Does a bike have to be insured to be left on the street?

It does.

Same logic that you can't leave a trailer in the road without it being attached to a car.

The second bike my 'mate' would be getting would be a cheap thrasher so he wouldn't be too worried about it.
Interesting point about the bike being already insured by the owner. He'll have to do some research on that.
Very Happy

theortically yes as you have to have road tax, and to get that you have to prove you are insured

Yes it does, if it's parked on the road. Even if you take a wheel out or engine out (which apparently used to be a old wives tale of how to get round it)

I'm getting my dad to insure my MZ, it'll cost him next to nothing. NCB since the stone age. He insures a VFR800 for just over £100 fully comp.

Then I plan to ride it on my rider policy, tax will be ok, since it will be insured by someone else.

Shouldn't matter who's name the V5 is in.

Normally the bike must be registered to you to insure it.

I believe it doesn't count for your own bikes usually, must be someone else's.

Yeahh this is a big deffo.

The 3rd party cover only applies as long as the vehicle is insured by someone else.

I used to think the opposite, but having seen a police documentary, I know that it must be seperately insured.

The same applied when I sold my last Mondeo, the new owner asked me not to cancel my insurance for a week, so he would be insured using his 3rd party.

This is a deffo, don't risk it, you'll get done for having no insurance.
