Looking to replace fork seals, springs and oil in the next 2 weeks.

Just one question before I do so:

What do I rest the front end/engine on Confused
You obviously can't use a front paddock stand...and the exhaust runs under the engine with the frame above the engine. So how do I rest the bike onto somehting to keep it stable?

I'd assume the exhaust would not be a good place to rest the bikes mass on!

Take the exhaust off Razz

Provided the nuts aren't seized then it will take no more than 15minutes to take them off and put them back (you will need new crush washers though at £1each probably)

If it has a centerstand you can use something heavy to hold the back down and raise the front, ideally use ratchet ties (you obviously dont want anything falling off or you'll have a knackered front end and possibly bent frame...)

You could use scafolding to hang it from and allsorts of other tricks, but a padock stand/center at the rear and jack under the engine block is probably the best bet..

You can with one which goes under the yokes instead of the fork legs. Smile

Top man Stevey. Thumbs Up However....I can say, £88 for a stand is just to much, full stop. I'd consider hiring one but no chance would I find a place that hires them out. Sad

When trying to remove the exhaust, one of the bolts did indeed break off...so I can firmly say, it's stuck on there. So, no....exhaust can't come off Sad

One fork at a time? Laughing (yes, I was joking...Razz)

Use two car ramps standing upright, and rest a metal bar with a bolt through the middle (to go up into the yoke) between the two.

Lift the bike up with a car jack under the downpipes slide the bar through, then gently lower the bike down onto the bar.

Used this method a few times, and never had a problem.

Hmm....thats an interesting one bella. Don't suppose you took a picture of your bike on this contraption, did you? I'll get the car ramps out tonight in this case and see if it can be done. Smile

just put it on the centre stand , when you loosen the forks in the yokes the weight will tilt back on to the back wheel anyway , and then you can take off your front wheel and everything else .

I always strip the front off my bikes this way , you can also get someone to sit on the pillion seat on the centre stand and put a couple of wood blocks under the front pipes just to chock it with the front wheel off the floor (your helper can get off at this point) it won't hurt the front pipes because the centre stand is taking all the weight

Depends on the bike, most of the weight is forwards of the centre stand and lots are so front heavy removing the wheel and forks makes no difference and it still goes down at the front end. Always had to ratchet strap the back wheel down on the ramp even with all the front end removed on the Blackbird.

zrx61 - How much did that stand cost? OT: Bike looks lovely...

The hornet doesn't have a centre stand as standard but I'll be buying one. There's one on ebay at the moment. Thumbs Up

Been told by others on the hornets nest that they let the bike rest on the downpipes. I would have thought that would be bad practise, putting too much stress on the joins on the engine block and connecting bracket underneath the bike. Confused I was looking at one of those paddock stands that support it at the headstock, but £88 is crazy money. Sad

Appreciate all the feedback folks. Thumbs Up Smile

Er... lost in my over enthusiasm for taking things apart I forgot to record the details. Had the Gixxer on the car ramps and metal bar for aaaages out the back, it never fell over, even when Mother accidentally (we think of purpose to get it moved out of the way) rammed it with the wheelie bin Very Happy

Ammo crate, perfect.

Although when I took the forks off, did all I had to do, put them back on then got the ammo crate wedged between the downpipes and the front wheel. Took two of us to lift the front wheel over the box.

I think I paid about $350 for the front & rear, they are made by PitBull.

Bike looks lovely? look closer, thats AFTER it was totalled in a wreck on June 12th.. look at the duck tail, the fairing, clocks, clutch lever, left bar end weight, crankcase (bottom left where the cover has been removed) & the dent in the gastank at the front/left on the purple stripe, front left turn signal & the left rearset angle.. Sad
