hey
just had my bike in my garage to change the front wheel. when i had finished i tried to test the run out of the front discs so i got the wheel off the ground and tried to spin it, after the wheel had turned one complete revolution it slowed and stopped

should this happen? is it safe to happen, and if not what could be causing the wheel to not spin completely free

p.s i also cleaned the brake calipers and pads and noticed that one of the postions was very stiff. could this be whats causing the problem (i.e pushing onto the pads and not releasing the pressure when the brake is not being used)

cheers

Brake discs usually do bind slightly which would stop the wheel spinning freely.

They shouldn't bind too much though. A good way to check is to go for a short ride without touching the front brake. When you stop (using the back brake) feel the disc. If it is hot, they are binding too much.

Can you do this for the rear aswell, my rear wheel only spins about 1/4 of a turn when I spin it. Confused is that right? Even with caliper off It doesn't spin much more. Could it be bearings?

I would expect the rear to spin fairly freely, certainly more than 1/4 turn.
Have you checked you haven't got the bolt on the rear spindle too tight?
Is there greese on the spindle/bearings?
Is the back brake binding?

Those are the obvious things I can think of.

Yes.

Agreed - If you spin the wheel hard - you should certainly get a lot more than 1 rev. This extra friction will slow you down, as well as overheat the brake components.

Note of caution - do not touch the disk immediately, spit on it first. Unless you want a skin graft that is Wink

More likely dry chain or tyre is rubbing something. Might be gearbox drag. Is the oil viscosity right?

Take the chain + caliper off and try spinning again to test this. If it is bearings, change them asap as they will be totally f8cked if they're causing drag.

Front brakes will bind quite easily, on a few bikes since they've been left for a while the front wheel will only complete about 1 rev.

I found the simple solution is to simply ride it. Failing that a caliper rebuild, which is a 15 minute job.
