I looked back on the past few weeks but cant find any mention of this. In the newest MCN it says on the front page that there is a new legislation in the works to have any bike that produces over 74dcb of noise can be confiscated "by force if necessary". Am i the only one that finds this JUST A TAD extreme? As stated in the article, a hairdryer produces 75dcb of sound, its a bit of a rediculous idea. It might be possible to quiet down some bikes, but what about the likes of supermoto's and offroad machines? Sorry if its been posted before

That kind of idea has been floating around for a while. It's the sort of crap MCN publish to get people to buy it. Razz

Sorry white noise. Wasnt sure on how to type it properly. I think people get the script anyways. Apparently they are trying to cut down on all noise pollution, but are taking out the "main cause of noise pollution" first. Us. Maybe in future they will make us have a special permit for the operation of hairdryers?

just to let people know the c-weighting dB has a almost flat frequency response that tails off and high and low frequencies, where as the A-weighted dB has a frequency response that simulates humans response to sound as your hearing has different sensitivities at different frequencies.

lol.. if that law came to pass, i think local police would get very tired, very easy of pulling every car and bike due to noise polution... id be pretty screwed as most of my baffles are "missing"
as are most of the joy boys around here.

Id like to see it happen... Rolling Eyes

Hi

Think it is a bit of MCN sensationalism.

Any change to a 74db limit would need to be Europe wide and part of type approval. Whatever some UK Lord says is irrelevant.

And the police already have the power (via an ASBO) to confiscate a vehicle used in a manner to annoy people.

By the way, a reduction from 80db to 74db is about a 75% reduction in noise.

All the best

Keith

Such a limit most likely could only be applied to new machines anyways. Any machine not made in the last few years would never be able to pass such a test.

Shocked When you look at it like that, its fairly extreme.

I had a read through MCN while at work last night, some of the things that "Peel" chap come out with were unreal! You can tell he's not a bike fan.

I doubt much will happen, or if it does, it wont happen for quite some time. Even if it was enforced, no one would stick to the new regulations. I know I wouldnt, I'd fit a shorty can for the fun of things! Laughing

In the end, it says alot of the police forces are behind the new legislation, and we all know they love to pull you for anything, but when probably well over 50% of the biking population will be over the limit, will they try to pull every one of us?

Great that puts my completely standard R6 about 20db over the limit. Theres a sticker on the frame that says 96db at 8000 rpm (I think).

The same Peel twat said that if you do an advanced riding course, it doesn't make you any safer rider, it just means you'll kill yourself in a more skilled way.

Someone explain how he got any power at all?

There are some bikes which by their very nature are noisy anyway, even with standard cans.
For example most of the singles and twins.

Would this also include open clutch covers on Ducati?!!!!!

To be honest the average "regular " copper dont give a damn or even know! traffic police numbers are at the lowest they have been for years.

I wouldnt worry about it until it happens people.

Hmmm.... here come the soap jokes Wink

I can see a law like this coming in quite soon. I don't necessarily agree with it, its similar to the 100bhp thing a few years ago, but you have to admit, some cans on bikes and cars are just plain antisocial.
