Has anyone ever come off a bike wearing a leather jacket not designed for a motorbike with no armour sewn into it? just a normal casual jacket.

I'm interested to know wether the leather came apart or if it helped with stopping gravel rash like a proper jacket would have?

If so how fast was you going and did you slide without hitting any roadside furniture?

I know it's obvious that a proper bike jacket will do a better job but I just want to know if that type of jacket will do anything in an off.

How about denim trousers or jacket? Do jeans hold up in a spill?

I know that proper bike gear has something sewn behind the 'Contact Points' to dissipate heat or decrease 'heat causing' friction.

As well as the stripping action of abrasion, the friction generates heat which melts stuff. Not only skin.
Flame proof suits worn by steelmen/firemen are lined with heat deflecting material too. And they may wear woollen garments underneath it all too, as wool insulates when it melts through heat.
But a bit bulky just for a blast to the Paki's.

Not all of bike gear is the same as you only get what you can pay for.
But any decent leather is better than your epidermis in a 'road rub'.
But I'll be contradicted by a few as is the fashion at BCF
Depends on the thickness of the garment too.

In an accident with a short slide, jeans are like wearing pyjamas, they make no difference.

I had a casual jacket on when I crashed, mine was a bit rubbery on the outside, it melted to my fleece but I was ok. TBH the impact of something is the thing to worry about mainly, the skin factor is all up to you.

Didn't someone on here have a crash a while back wearing a replica jacket ?
I don't think it held up too well, but neither it should it isn't made to be crashed in. They're fashion jackets nothing more.

something like this etc. what do you expect for £50 ?

I shouldn't think denim would do much except for the psyhcological factor. I feel much safer in jeans than i would in trackie bottoms even though both are useless.

Not sure if that is a good or bad thing though.

Very Happy No.

Closest I've come to non-bike gear is a while ago when on a 50cc moped (emergency transport to get me to work). Jeans and a wax cotton jacket (barbour style). Didn't feel safe, wasn't happy. Jeans aren't the warmest things either.

I dunno because the thing is i've come off a push bike doing 35 at the bottom of a reeeeeeeeally steep long hill/road, handlebars literally unloosened and came off in my hands funnilly enough and I went down. That happenned in nothing but shorts and tshirt and I came off with lots of grazes and a few bruises nothing that stopped me doing the same thing the next day with a tighter set of bolts holding the handlebars on this time Smile .

But i've also had a drill catch some levis and ripp them to shreds, they came apart like paper.

I dunno what to think really, that's why i wanted some real life incedants.

casual leathers tend to have single stitching at the joins, and is a thinner, lower quality leather.

it will wear thru faster, and there's more chance of it coming apart..

that being said, I wear just such a jacket if I'm niping into town, a 10 min ride where speed rarely goes about 30mph.

Jeans can help very slightly, they obviously won't stop bruises, but may very slightly prevent abrasions in low speed spills. Once you get to a slightly decent speed they'll get ripped open very quickly, then be pretty useless.

I wouldn't trust a lot of fashion leather jackets to stay together while wearing them, nevermind when sliding down the road.
