I have a Kawasaki GPZ500S that I ride solo mainly for commuting. The twin exhausts have been replaced with a Motad 'Nexxus' 2-1 system at some time before I got it.

The bike has a current MoT, but the right-hand pillion footrest and the bit that clamps it to the frame (the hanger?) are both missing - I'm assuming because the bottom of the footrest would be touching the silencer (or it was just lost when the exhaust was fitted).

I have no intention of taking a pillion on this bike, but I understand that footrests must be fitted for the bike to pass its MoT.

Is this true? (If not, I want ask how it got through its last MoT.....).

I'm trying to get hold of a rest and hanger secondhand (tried ebay, still waiting for a response from one seller, the others don't have one), but if I can't get one what's my best course of action?

I've seen 'universal' footrests for sale, that have a kind of clamp attached. Are these any good, and are they good enough for the MoT?

Thanks

Hi

On our (older) GPZ500 the r/h pillion footrest hanger is also the rear mounting point for the exhaust.

A lot of the cheap generic footrests are pretty poor quality, but that might not be an issue if you never carry pillions.

All the best

Keith

A bit of threaded bar with a nylock nut on either side and a piece of hosepipe over the top will suffice for rear footpegs provided they are placed somewhere a pillion could conceivably put their feet on them. This would set you back around £2.50 and you can take them off again after the MOT. I know because I have done it on three occasions for bikes with missing pillion pegs.

There was no need to take the footpegs and hangers off the bike to fit a motad nexxus, they clamp on using the existing pillion peg bolt so I have no idea what the previous owner was playing at. Confused

Cheers - I'll go for the cheapest option unless I can get a hanger and peg secondhand.

You are right, if a bike has a pillion seat it must have pillion footpegs as well, otherwise it will fail the mot.

The suggestion with long threaded bolt and nut seems good Smile
